[ Our Graphic Design Definition ]
Graphic Design integrates communication in all spheres. Our Graphic
Design Program emphasizes that all realms of visual communication
influence the recipients message. The responsibility of designers is to
determine how to posture a message a client wants to communicate. In
order to do this, a designer must have a broad base of knowledge,
including an understanding of visual problem solving. Basic concepts
must be understood first, in order to provide a framework for more
complex problems. This framework is built through the teaching of design
principles and elements as a basis for finding order in chaos. Critical
thinking is essential to creating effective visual communication. This
entails a process of distilling the most appropriate solution to a
problem. Solutions take form through determining the most appropriate of
communication. This communication can be done through several forms of
printed materials or digitally through the web. We offer three
programs covering these specialties, a Graphic Design Program, an
Illustration Program and a Digital Design Program.
Graphic design is all around us. Logos,
business cards, stationery, posters, brochures, book jacket covers,
labels and greeting cards are all created by graphic designers. So are
billboards, restaurant menus and calendars, and the list goes on. The
look and feel of any printed piece is conveyed by its graphic design.
The combination of pictures and text is the most powerful tool for
communication.
Graphic designers and illustrators are researchers, organizers and
interpreters of information as well as makers of visual forms. They find
jobs in design studios, advertising agencies, design departments with
corporations and institutions, or work as independent freelancers. The
Chabot College Graphic Design Program offers a diverse group of classes
that provides students with the up-to-date classes necessary to become a
successful graphic designer. Students may take courses to gain design
and technical skills, enrich their lives by pursuing individual classes
or to prepare to transfer to a four-year institution. They may earn a
Graphic Design Associate in Arts degree, a Graphic Design Certificate,
an Illustration Certificate and/or a Digital Design Certificate. A
student can complete the Certificates and the Graphic Design A.A. degree
in two years.
