ADVISORY TO SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND TO PARENTS OF YOUNG MINOR CHILDREN APPLYING FOR CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT AT CHABOT COLLEGE

It is important that school officials, and the parents of young minor children, understand that as students at Chabot College, the children are entering a college environment, and that carries with it situations, all of which cannot be anticipated. The average age of the Chabot College student has increased in recent years, and the content and atmosphere of classes will frequently reflect this diverse adult population. Some of the possible circumstances are noted below:

For example, school officials, parents and students should be aware that:

Course materials are geared toward adult students. Classroom activities may include frank discussions of adult topics, graphic audio-visual presentations, and other such exposure.
Students may be exposed to explicit adult language inside and outside of the classroom;
When classes are cancelled or end prior to the expected time, the college does not inform parents. A meeting place should be established ahead of time, and plans made for what to do in the event of an emergency such as blackout or earthquake. Cell phones are encouraged but must be turned off during classes.
Grades earned in the course become a part of the student's permanent college record. By law, all coursework must be reported to any other community college and/or four-year college or university, even if low grades or withdrawals are listed. The same applies for future applications for higher education scholarships.
Federal law provides privacy rights for all college students regardless of age. Parents cannot contact instructors for information concerning their children. If an “Authorization to Release Information” form has been completed and is on file, information can be provided to parents by a college administrator.
Parents are not allowed to participate in classes unless they are enrolled.
Completion of units will impact future eligibility for financial aid, as there are limits as to the maximum units for which a student may be eligible for financial aid during their college career.

This list is not inclusive of all the situations that might arise. Neither is this list meant to create undue concern for parents or the minor students – only to serve as a precaution to allow you to manage your particular situation so that your child will gain the academic benefits and have a safe, positive educational experience at Chabot College.
