Transfer Agreements with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)

Visit California Community Colleges' HBCU Transfer Program website
In an agreement signed March 17, 2015 between the California Community Colleges and nine historically black colleges and universities, California community college students who complete certain academic requirements are now guaranteed transfer to a participating historically black college and university campus.

Historically black colleges and universities were established primarily to serve the higher education needs of the black community, however they are open to students of any ethnicity.  There are 105 historically black colleges and universities in the country, with most located in the South and East Coast.  They all award bachelor’s degrees in many fields. Some also award masters and doctorate degrees.

California community college transfer students have an opportunity to guarantee admission to participating Historically Black Colleges and Universities through the HBCU Transfer Agreement.

Under the agreement, students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and meets one of the following criteria may obtain a guarantee to a participating HBCU:

·         Student will earn an AA-T or AS-T, or

·         Student will earn an AA degree or AS degree that includes the completion of either the University of California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC), or the California State University General Education Breadth pattern (CSU GE Breadth), or

·         Completion of 30 transferrable semester units.

Students who qualify for this guarantee may obtain an application fee waiver code when using the Common Black College Application to apply to the partner HBCU .

STUDENTS:

Students are encouraged to research the HBCUs to where you would like to transfer and the requirements to obtain this guarantee by reviewing the Transfer Agreement requirements. You can do so by visiting the HBCU Transfer Agreement webpage. Then, meet with a counselor to review transfer options and develop and educational plan that bests meets your goals and needs. When it is time to seek the guarantee, you and your counselor will complete the appropriate HBCU TAA forms.
