These individuals have indicated their willingness to mentor new online instructors, although they reserve the right to say “no” if their workload can’t accommodate another “mentee”.
Noel Benkman, Music Instructor
Noel has been teaching online since Spring 1999, and currently teaches 3 different community college online music courses. He completed the Quality Online course at UCSD and the Teaching Online course at Cerro Coso Community College. He also worked for 4 years as Production Manager of Web Course Development at Teacher Universe and Riverdeep Interactive Learning, managing and producing over a thousand interactive Flash-based modules teaching K-12 teachers how to integrate technology into their classrooms. Desmond Chun, Computer Science Instructor
Des has been teaching online for 5 years, and has developed and taught five different community college courses in Computer Science, CAS, and Business. Ken Grace, Health and PE Instructor
Ken has been teaching online for 7 years, and has developed and taught 7 different courses at Chabot. He has participated in seminars and taken various online courses to develop his online teaching expertise. He teaches online because he thinks it’s another way to serve our community, and for many online students is the only way they can take classes at Chabot. Scott Hildreth, Astronomy and Physics Instructor
Scott has been teaching online for more than 10 years, and teaches two fully online Astronomy courses as well as two hybrid online Physics courses. He was one of the first class of graduates from the CSU East Bay program in online teaching and learning, which comprises 10+ graduate level courses. His favorite quote about online teaching is “Technology doesn’t teach. We do.” He loves that teaching online allows us to reach a group of students who might never otherwise come to Chabot, but recognizes that it doesn’t work for all students. Dmitriy Kalyagin, Business Instructor
Dmitriy has been teaching online at Chabot for 4 years, and has developed and taught two different online business courses, with a third in development now. He has completed 4 graduate courses in online teaching and learning at CSU East Bay, and is working toward his Masters degree in Online Teaching. Pamela Shen, English Instructor
Pam has had seven years as an online educator as well as extensive experience in online curriculum development and instructional web site design. She holds a Master's degree in English and a Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning from California State University, Hayward. Pam has taught over twenty-five online courses for Chabot, Diablo Valley College, and CSU East Bay. In addition, she was the online Writing Coach for the CSU East Bay Technical and Professional Writing Program for three years. She currently teaches three online courses, one for Chabot and two for another local community college. Pam has also served as a member of Chabot's Distance Education Committee. Judy O’Toole, CAS Instructor
Judy has been teaching online for 3 years, and has developed and taught three. She has completed the Online Teaching Certification Program at UCSC, and is currently completing the Online Teaching Certification Program at Cerro Coso Community College. She also has a Blackboard certificate from Cerro Coso. She has informally mentored other instructors at Chabot in the use of Blackboard. Judy is a member of Chabot’s Distance Education Committee. Ramona Silver, Philosophy, Humanities and English Instructor
Ramona has taught online for two years. She has also done graduate study in online instruction. Ramona has developed several fully online courses and has taught two of them. She is a member of the DE Committee and recently she was given the opportunity to collaborate with Mary Dermody and Jan Novak in the development of the new Introduction to Online Learning Course that will be offered in the Spring of 2008. Lisa Ulibarri, English Instructor
Lisa is in her second year of teaching online, and has several years of experience as an online teaching assistant and writing coach. She is currently teaching 2 sections of English 1A online. Lisa is completing the Cerro Coso Online Teaching Certificate program, and was herself a “mentee” of Pam Shen for 3 years. Lisa is a member of Chabot’s Distance Education Committee. Wanda Wong, Computer Science and Business Instructor
Wanda has been teaching online for 3 years, although she has been using Blackboard for her campus classes for the past 6 years. She has developed and taught 5 different fully online and hybrid online courses in Computer Science and Business.
