Attendees: Jan, Novak (chair), Ahmad Asir, Norman Buchwald, Bob Buell, Desmond Chun, Richard Dinwiddie, Scott Hildreth, Michael Langdon, Andrew Pierson, Lisa Ulibarri, Minta Winsor.
Spring Proposals:
The committee briefly reviewed the status of course demonstrations for Spring 08
online courses. Charlotte Lofft's Business Law course demonstration has
been completed and approved. Michael Thompson's and Sherry Yeager's History course
demonstrations have been scheduled for late November/early December. Jan
will talk with Lani about Tram's Psychology Counseling and
Mary about Terrance Thompson's Work Experience course demonstrations, but we
believe these are all planned. The three proposals received after our September 11th deadline (CAS-72D, CSCI-14,
and GNST-4931) have now been posted in BOLT, and Jan asked the committee to
provide feedback on these proposals by November 30th. We will ask the CAS-72D instructor to demonstrate her
course to the committee at the beginning of Spring semester, before the course
goes live.
February FLEX Day DE Workshops:
The committee discussed options for FLEX day workshops, and decided to propose
four workshops:
Blackboard 7.3 (morning) workshop to focus on new features in this upgrade as well as ways for all Chabot instructors to use Blackboard in their courses--whether on campus, hybrid, or fully online courses.
Teaching Math Online (working lunch) workshop. We'd like to approach the math faculty with this suggestion, and bring in online math instructors from other community colleges to discuss their experiences with teaching math online.
Meet the online student (working lunch) workshop. This workshop would center on the "Going the Distance Video", and ALL Chabot faculty and staff would be encouraged to attend. We would also have a moderated discussion on how classified staff can support online students, and what staff would like to learn about these classes and the students.
New tools for online teaching (afternoon) workshop. This session would demonstrate some of the new teaching tools available to online instructors, including Respondus, SafeAssign, SearchPath, Podcasts (and transcription), and Captivate.
Jan will draft the proposals.
Review of IPBC Update Draft: Jan distributed a draft of an update to the IPBC on our priority objective. The committee suggested some minor changes, which will be reflected in the final document.
November 30th "Talking about Online Teaching" Forum: The committee discussed agenda options for this forum. There are quite a few schedule conflicts for that day, and we concluded that we would cancel this meeting but continue to work on scheduling a session at the DSRC to view an online course as "seen" by a visually handicapped student.
"Other Stuff":
More volunteers are needed to provide access to their courses to instructors interested in teaching online. Jan, Scott, and Judy have volunteered, and we're looking for at least 2 more instructors who will allow access.
There is continuing confusion about how to provide clear guidance to faculty, particularly adjunct faculty, about the requirement to get Dean's approval and subdivision support for online course proposals, preferably before they begin the proposal development work. Jan will review the DE website and our proposal form to look for opportunities to clarify this, and will also create a "welcome email" for faculty that register for the Developing an Online Course Proposal class that emphasizes the need for Dean approval.
Suggested topics for 12/5 committee meeting: share tips about favorite online teaching tool or technique, invite Jay Mumford back to discuss his plans for RE-80 for Spring.
