Attendees: Jan, Novak (chair), Ahmad Asir, Norman Buchwald, Bob Buell, Desmond Chun, Mary Dermody, Richard Dinwiddie, Scott Hildreth, Michael Langdon, Hilal Ozdemir, Andrew Pierson, Ramona Silver, Lisa Ulibarri, Lani Wilson, Minta Winsor, Wanda Wong
Jan announced that Lisa Ulibarri (pending tonight's Board of Trustees approval) is our new, permanent Instructional Designer. Hooray!
Spring Proposals:
We have received two proposals after our September 11th deadline: CAS-72D
and CSCI-14. CAS-72D will be taught by an instructor that hasn't taught
online at Chabot previously, and will be a late start class. CSCI-14 is a
hybrid online course that will be team taught by Jonathon Traugott and Wanda
Wong, two "fast track" instructors. The committee agreed to review the
written proposals by the end of this semester. That will complete our
review of CSCI-14. We will ask the CAS-72D instructor to demonstrate his
course to the committee at the beginning of Spring semester, before the course
goes live.
Online Course Evaluations:
The committee discussed the status of online course evaluations for this
semester, particularly for tenure track instructors. There are two
outstanding issues which are preventing us from conducting these evaluations.
The District has not yet determined how to administer student evaluations in
light of last semester's low response rates in the pilot program. We are
awaiting word from Jeannine Methe. The Faculty Association and the
District also need to finalize the timeframe allowed for the observation (access
to the online course) by the evaluator and the evaluator's pay. This is a
subject of negotiations. Jan continues to follow up with both Jeannine and
the FA.
Online Teaching Technology "Mini-Grants":
The committee reviewed a draft of an announcement,
proposal form, and technology ideas for this new program. The entire
committee supports the program and approved the announcement materials, which
will be distributed today or tomorrow to our online teaching faculty.
Online Student Survey:
The committee reviewed a draft of the survey we hope to conduct with our online
students this semester. Several changes were suggested, and Jan will
finalize the survey based on that feedback. We still need to determine how
to administer the survey, and how to engage our online teaching faculty in this
process. Jan, Minta, and Lisa will develop options for survey
administration in Blackboard, and Jan will draft an email to faculty to explain
the purpose of the survey and their involvement.
Faculty Survey:
We've received surveys from all divisions except Counseling. Lani will
follow up on the status of these surveys. Andrew suggested that we ask
Institutional Research to analyze the survey data. Good idea, Andrew!
Special Planning Meeting:
Jan suggested a date of November 13th from 1-3 p.m. for a special planning
meeting to review our Intro to Online Learning (student) and Developing an
Online Proposal (faculty) courses, to focus on accessibility, to determine needs
for Blackboard upgrade training, and more. Although a number of people
can't attend a meeting on that date and time, it seems to be the best option.
Jan will confirm date, time, location, and agenda.
Next Meeting Agenda:
Scott suggested that at our next regular committee
meeting, we discuss any general trends or concerns we're seeing in our online
classes, such as student expectations about workload in online classes.
One specific area the committee would like to explore is academic integrity.
These topics will be on the agenda for our next meeting.
