Federal Work Study

What is Federal Work Study?
- Federal Work-Study program (FWS) is a
federally funded employment program that enables you to
work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) on campus (or in rare cases, off
campus).
- The amount awarded is the maximum amount you can earn during the academic year;
it does not guarantee job placement.
- You must be enrolled at least half time (6 units) during the Fall
and/or Spring Semester (and at least 3 units in Summer) to participate in
the FWS program. If you
drop below 6 units or withdraw from school, you must stop working immediately.
- You also must maintain
Satisfactory Academic Progress
to be eligible.
How do I apply for Federal Work Study?
- First step is to apply for financial
aid by completing your
FAFSA application.
Question31 in the FAFSA application asks students "In addition to
grants, are you interested in being considered for work study or student
loans?"---you must select "Work-study (student aid that you earn through
work)".
What happens after I indicate interest in my FAFSA?
- Tracking letter and documents-you will receive a tracking letter
indicating documentation you have to provide to our office, in order for us
to complete you file
- Financial Aid award letter-sent to student, summarizing the
financial aid award amount. Also, students receive a federal work study
award letter, and a copy of the student assistant application. Student must
indicate interest in FWS by submitting the completed student assistant
application to our office.
- After you submit your application, hiring departments come to our
office to review applicants. They choose the
applicants they are interested in, contact the student and set up an
interview with the student.
- If the department is interested in hiring the student, he/she will
obtain the student employment requisition form. The student must complete their
portion of the requisition form and submit to the hiring dept, then get a TB test for
employment purposes. Some student positions may require
fingerprinting.
- Once everything is completed, the hiring department will contact
the student about the employment start date.
Note: in order for students to
remain in the FWS program, he/she must maintain
Satisfactory Academic Progress,
be enrolled at least 1/2 time, and re-new/re-apply for work study on the FAFSA
between January 1st and March 2nd each year.
If I haven't applied for financial aid, how do I indicate interest in
Federal Work Study?
- If a student's financial aid file is complete the student
is encouraged to come to our office, and request to be placed on the Federal
Work Study Wait list, then complete and submit the student assistant
employment application.
- If we have not completed your
financial aid file, you may make a FAFSA correction (work study correction)
by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov. Then,
come to our office and request a student assistant employment application.
Complete the application and request to be placed in the FWS Wait List.
Note:
Not all applicants are awarded FWS Funds, this is a federal program and funding
is limited. FWS are offered on a 1st come 1st served basis. International
