Scholarships

Scholarships are a great way to finance your education. Although they are often overlooked, scholarships can provide free money to qualified applicants who complete the process.  Often, scholarships ask for letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a personal essay. Always make sure you complete your application early, and call the scholarship program manager if you ever have any questions; below you will find useful links that will help you in your search for free money!

new! The Casey Family Scholars Program for Foster Youth

  • Have been in foster care for one consecutive year at the time of their 18th birthday OR have been adopted or taken into legal guardianship out of foster care or upon the death of their parents after their 16th birthday OR have lost both parents to death before the age of 18 and not been subsequently adopted or taken into legal guardianship.

  • Be enrolled in or accepted into an accredited post-secondary program at the undergraduate level (university, college, community college or vocational/technical institute.)

  • Be under the age of 25 on March 31, 2010.

  • Have been in foster care or orphaned while living in the United States. U.S. citizenship is not required.

new! Change a Life Foundation Scholarship

  • Must be attending a California public HS as a 12th grade student and enrolling in a four-year College or University -or- must be attending a community college in California and ready to transfer to a four-year college or university.

  • Must have a minimum weighted GPA of 2.75 from 9th grade to the first semester of 12th grade –OR- cumulative GPA of 2.5 for community college courses.
  • Must have a minimum SAT score of 1350 or minimum ACT score of 19 (if applying as a high school senior).
  • Must be economically disadvantaged: See HUD Low Income Guideline. (See back of brochure)
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Resident.
  • Must show evidence of extracurricular activities such as school activities, community involvement, and/or employment.
  • Must have community service.
  • Must have above average attendance.
  • Deadline: March 18, 2010

new! 2010-2011 Hispanic Community Affairs Council Scholarship

   Scholarships are awarded to high school graduates, GED recipients, community college students, students attending a four-year college or university, and students accepted into a postgraduate education or credential program. The scholarships are dedicated to recognizing the Hispanic/Latino culture and the education of Hispanic/Latino students.

  • Community college scholarships of $750 each
  • Transfer student scholarships of $1,500 each
  • Four year college scholarships of $1,500 each
  • Postgraduate scholarships of $1,500 each

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded

new! Chicano Latino Education Association Scholarship

  • Scholarships will be awarded to students based on goals, academic achievement, two completed essay questions, financial need and community involvement.
  • Applicants must be entering and or continuing students at Chabot College in Hayward, California or Las Positas College in Livermore, CA with a minimum of 6 semester units during Fall of 2009-2010.   
    OR
    Must be a student transferring to a four-year Institution in Fall 2010-2011.
  • A resident of  Alameda and Contra Costa County
  • The CLEA Scholarship is effective Fall of 2010-11 academic year until Summer of 2011. In order to receive disbursement of the award CLEA officials will need to verify student’s 2009-10 enrollment. 
  • Recipients of a previous CLEA scholarship are not eligible.

new! New American Scholars Program

  • The deadline for application materials to be completed and received is Friday, March 5th.
  • All eligible applications will be reviewed for the applicant's financial need, academic standing, and personal character.
  • Some applicants may be contacted for further information and/or invited to participate in interviews.
  • Scholarship winners will be notified by June 1, 2010.
  • Scholarship recipients will be required to:
    • maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA
    • send transcripts at the completion of each grading term
    • participate in E4FC events and meetings, including an Awards Ceremony on June 13, 2010
    • complete 20 hours minimum of community service and/or professional development activities
    • maintain ongoing communication with our program

new! Through the Looking Glass Scholarship

Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are pleased to announce new scholarships specifically for high school seniors and college students who have parents with disabilities. A total of ten $1000 scholarships will be given out Fall 2010.

  1. High School Seniors - To be eligible, a student must be a high school graduate (or graduating senior) by Summer 2010, planning to attend a two-year or four-year college in Fall 2010 in pursuit of an AA, BA or BS degree, and have at least one parent with a disability.

  2. College Students - To be eligible, a student must be currently enrolled in a in a two-year or four-year college in Fall 2010 in pursuit of an AA, BA or BS degree, be 21 years of age or younger as of March 1, 2010,and have at least one parent with a disability.

All application materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2010. Individuals may submit only one application per award period.

Selection criteria for all scholarships include academic performance, community activities and service, letter of recommendation and an essay describing the experience of growing up with a parent with a disability.

The Health Professions Education Foundation- www.healthprofessions.ca.gov.  Please click here to access scholarships and Loan Repayment programs that offer qualifying students and graduates of the health professions (Dentistry, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistant, Dental Hygiene, and Certified Nurse Midwifery).  All program recipients are required to provide direct patient care in a medically underserved area (MUA) of California as designated by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). Educators for Fair Consideration New American Fund-Provides financial awards and student services for low-income immigrant college students living in the San Francisco Bay Area. For 2009, awards will be given in the amount of $2,500 - $5,000. In addition to financial awards, the scholarship provides ongoing support services. Taxability of Scholarship & Other Info you should know

  • This article highlights some key concerns regarding the Financial Aid process and scholarship application process.  Click here to read the article.
  • Your scholarship may or may not be taxable. Generally speaking, a scholarship or fellowship is tax free if you are a degree candidate and the award is used to pay for tuition and required fees, books, supplies and equipment. Any amounts used to pay for room and board and a stipend for living expenses is taxable.
