Depression and
Loneliness
What about
Depression?
Depression and loneliness are
common responses to the transition to college and/or graduate and professional schools. The stresses of moving away from family and friends, leaving a familiar environment,
and facing new academic pressures are all factors that can contribute to
depression. All of us may feel sad or "blue" sometimes, and it may
last a few days. The depression many times may be caused by a recent situation or event.
However, persistent and chronic depression can
be a serious medical illness; it’s not something that you
have made up in your head. It’s more than just feeling "down in the
dumps" or "blue" for a few days. It’s feeling "down" and "low" and
"hopeless" for weeks at a time. It's not your fault.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, we urge you to get help right away. Seek professional assistance by consulting your personal physician or, while on campus, drop by the Chabot Student Health Center for a consultation with our Health Practitioner and/or the Mental Health Counselor/Intern as soon as possible.
Serious depression does not go away by itself, and like any serious medical condition it requires treatment. At Chabot College, we are dedicated to helpingWHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO NEXT?
