Search Engines Assignment
This exercise will take twenty-five minutes.  Do the best you can to finish this assignment.  Obviously, you would be in better shape if you already have a research question before proceeding.

1.  For this class, you are to search in these three search engines:

Google                            Teoma                        Open Directory

Their official web addresses are below:

2.  Enter your RESEARCH QUESTION here  (See Searching the Web handout for coming up with a research question):
 
 

3.  Select search terms from your research question:
 
 

4.  Select Related Terms for your search terms (broader, narrow, synonyms, somehow related to your terms or topic)
 
 
 
 

5.  Create search statements.  Remember to use the plus, minus, and quotation symbols when appropriate (the + sign is not necessary for Google, but is for the other two)
 
 
 
 

6.  Go to Web Guides and Search Engines page, scroll down to Google, Open Directory, or Teoma from those choices.  (Let's work with just these three today.  You can use the other search engines for the rest of this class and beyond, if you so wish)

  7. Use each search engine and keep scrolling down until you believe you have found a relevant site.  To determine, relevancy, you must look at the entries and then look at the web site, itself.  Bookmark the web sites you choose (Note: Do not bookmark results you get from a search engine as those can change at ANY time once you return).
