SUBJECT HEADINGS Library of Congress Subject Headings List Example: "Death Penalty (LC) Use Capital Punishment (LC)"
Sometimes instead of searching by keywords, you may have better luck finding materials by consulting the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).  This is important because you can sometimes get better search results.  For example, articles, books, and web sites on the "death penalty" will usually be indexed under "Capital Punishment."  To browse such headings, they are in the four thick red volumes on the left side of the reference desk.  They are also listed in the Library Catalog and in some of the subscription databases.

Here is just a sample of subject headings:

Fossil Hominids
Fossil Man
Human Evolution
Human Population Genetics
Man, Prehistoric
Paleoclimatology
Paleontology
Physical Anthropology

THE LIBRARY CATALOG

Search the library catalog for books related to your topic. Select a topic and create a search statement. Find a book and then its call number. Remember: Books will have in-depth material but will be dated.  For example,  most books on terrorism would be published, pre-September 11.

Go into the Library Catalog and select Heading.  Then, search by Subject Heading by entering your term and then clicking on the Subject button
Scroll down and click to other pages (if available) to view all the headings related to your main subject heading (see example of such list to the right).  Click on the links to headings that best meet your interest.
Subject Headings List from Catalog using the subject term, "Abortion"
If instead of searching by Subject, you want to combine different terms such as: obedience AND authority or abortion AND religion, select Keyword from the top bar and enter your terms with AND in between and then click on the Keyword button.

FINDING AN ARTICLE IN OUR COLLECTION

PAPER COPIES When finding a citation on Ebsco Host, check Notes to see if we have the Year in paper or Microfilm, first.  Go to the Periodicals Desk which is next to the elevator.

MICROFILM COPIES: If Ebsco Host Notes state Chabot has it on Microfilm, go to the green cabinets on the Mezzanine.  Microfilm readers are available on the wall.  For assistance in finding microfilm or using the readers, go to the Audio Visual Center desk on the Mezzanine.

If we do not have the title, do not despair.  Does Ebsco Host list another library having it?  Also, check to see if the Library at California State University, Hayward has the title by going to: http://aphid.csuchico.edu/lso/hayward/search.asp

Image Searching

Finding images can sometimes be a bit like finding a needle in a haystack.  However, Ebsco Host does have an Image database and we do have an excellent Library Research Guide to assist you in finding images from the Web.  Since there are no color copiers and printers on campus and copiers have very limited types of papers and enlargement capabilities, it is best to plan finding your images and graphics in advance.  Keep in mind that cutting out anything from a magazine, journal, newspaper or book from the Library's collection is vandalism.  You can check-out books and magazines and can certainly save what you find on the Web onto a floppy disk (or Email to yourself the image as an attachment).  Saving onto a floppy disk requires you to use the Student Computer Lab (not the reference computers).  Any requests for checking out a reference book requires approval from the librarian and will require you to leave your Student ID or Driver's License with the Library.  Color copiers and printers are available at copy services such as Kinko's.  Costs for color copies at such services are usually $1 per page.  Some copier services may refuse to do any copying for you based on copyright restrictions, but you can use any self-service copiers or printers.

Ebsco Host Image Database  http://search.ebscohost.com/login.asp
Go into Academic Search Elite and then from the top right, click on the Images button, (green button on top right).  Enter your search terms.  Images can be printed or saved onto disk (you can save onto disk in the Student Computer Lab on campus).

Online Reference Shelf: Images  http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/onlineref/graphics.html
This Library Research Guide provides tips on how to find images on the World Wide Web as well as how to find images from traditional books in the Library.  There are many search engines specifically designed for finding images that have been posted on Web sites.  Once you find images, you can then save the image onto a disk or print.  Do pay attention to any copyright restrictions, when relevant.  Below is an example of finding an image from FAST Multi-Media search:

1)  Go to FAST Multi-Media Search  http://multimedia.alltheweb.com/

2)  Select "Images" and enter your search strategy
Fast/AlltheWeb Screen Capture
3)  When finding a desirable image, click on the image itself (do not automatically save it, unless you want the image at the size indicated)

Image of Skull Found from AlltheWeb

4)  You will get description about the image, including the size of the image, the page where the image rests, copyright information, and links.  Click on "Image" to just have the image by itself appear on the page.

Details given about the File Type, Picture Size, and Memory Size

5.  Bring your Mouse over the image and Right Click.  A menu will appear with different choices.  Select Save Image As.

"Save Image As"

6.  When "Save Picture" appears, make sure you save in 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) to save onto your diskette.  Under File Name, give it a name you will recognize, followed by the extension of the matching file type (example on right uses a JPEG image so the extension is .jpg.  When done, click on Save.

World Wide Web

Face it. The World Wide Web can contain good resources for library research, but trying to find them is a chore! There is just too much junk and misinformation or web pages that have information without having their facts verified. Take caution and evaluate each web site you come across carefully.  For guidelines for evaluation, use the Web Evaluation Checklist (found at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/abby/evalution.html).

Search Engines that will More Likely Lead you to Academic Web Sites
Note: For this assignment I would strongly recommend you resort to this option last.  You will very likely find many biased web sites for this assignment that are furthermore, not of acceptable quality.  Unless you are an expert for evaluating the quality of a web site, I would recommend you not use a regular search engine, including Google and SearchEdU.

Start with the left side of the Web Guides and Search Engines page first, to find pages based on broad topics. Remember, when searching you will want to surround your phrases with quotes such as "forensic antrhopology"  and to place the + sign before all your terms, whether as one word or a phrase:  +"ice man" +austria
