Subject Headings

For Civil Liberties, use Civil Rights

Sometimes instead of searching by keywords, you may have better luck finding materials by consulting the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).  This is important because you can sometimes get better search results.  For example, articles, books, and web sites on Civil Liberties will usually be indexed under “Civil Rights."  To browse such headings, they are in the five thick red volumes on the reference shelves, on the left side of the reference desk.  When searching terms in a database, do think of other keywords as well and be prepared to perform several different searches (For example, search for “Trans Fatty Acids” and then do a separate search for “Trans Fats”)

Trans Fatty Acids
Foods-Fat Content
Oils and Fats, Edible

Lipids
Lipoproteins
Fat

Proteins
Carbohydrates
Sugars

Web Resources

Use search engines last for your research, and if you do, be prepared to evaluate web sites with a very skeptical eye.  Anybody can put anything on the web, and if you do not pay attention, you could be linking very questionable or misinformed sites.

Take a look at this web site on the warnings of the chemical, Dihydrogen Monoxide:  http://www.circus.com/~no_dhmo/

Information about many sites about this chemical substance is available at the good fact-checking site of web and Email urban legends called snopes.com:  http://www.snopes.com/toxins/dhmo.htm

Unfortunately, one paralegal opted to do research on this topic which led to very embarrassing results for the city Aliso Viejo:  http://tinyurl.com/2bkch

To evaluate web sites, the Library has an effective web evaluation checklist available at:  http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/abby/evaluation.html
