Blackboard Upgrade
The next Blackboard upgrade will take place over Winter Break. Following the Fall 2013 semester, Blackboard will be upgraded from Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 9 to Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 13 before the start of the Spring 2014 term. While this is not a major upgrade, it includes some new features and fixes from Service Packs 10, 11, 12, and 13. Details and video demonstrations of new functions can be found at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/OnlineTeaching/Blackboard/upgrades/
More details about the upgrade, and how to take a "test-drive" of the upgraded version, will be sent via email to the faculty teaching with Blackboard.

Interpersonal Interaction Impacts Quality
During a recent @ONE presentation on student authentication, Patricia James, the Dean of Distance Education at Mt. San Jacinto College, referenced an April 2013 publication from the Community College Research Center titled "Creating an Effective Online Instructor Presence." In interviews, online students said that they placed a high value on interaction with their instructors. Furthermore, students reported a greater sense of teacher presence and engagement when instructors used interactive technologies purposely and consistently, including the use of audio or video-capturing lectures. The entire publication can be viewed at the following link: http://ccrc.tc.columbia.edu/media/k2/attachments/effective-online-instructor-presence.pdf

Highlights from theCOOL:
A spotlight on the activities of the Committee On Online Learning.

Over the past month, the Committee On Online Learning reviewed proposals for 4 courses / 4 instructors: Biology 25 online, Business 7 hybrid, Psychology Counseling 10 online, and Sociology 1 online. Now that these proposals are approved, course demonstrations will be taking place soon. As part of the new "streamlined" course approval process, the course demonstrations will take place online to mimic the experience of a student. If you are interested in teaching a Summer/Fall 2014 online/hybrid course, you can learn more about the approval process at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/cool/process/.

Through a collaborative effort between LPC's DE Committee, Chabot's COOL, and ITS, students registering for an online or hybrid course will now be prompted with a new page in CLASS-Web, titled Student Acknowledgment of Requirements for Online & Hybrid Courses. Students will be asked to acknowledge statements about access to a computer with internet access, technology skills, myths and truths about online courses, student authentication, and the district-wide policy on student conduct. The new page/form was implemented in time for the Spring 2014 registration period.

The COOL is also working on clarifying the schedule information for online/hybrid classes. In effort to provide clearer information for students on how to get started in their online/hybrid courses as well as any course meeting requirements for hybrids, the COOL has been working on a suggested list of course schedule notes. The suggested schedule notes, or "templates," provide a standardized guide for fully online courses, hybrid courses, as well as late-start online courses. The suggested format can be altered/customized to fit the needs of each course or instructor.
