Highlights from theCOOL:
A spotlight on the activities of the Committee On Online Learning.

The Committee On Online Learning is currently reviewing the proposals submitted for Spring 2014 online courses. This semester, there are four new proposals (two from first-time online instructors). In addition to proposal reviews, the COOL has been working on several projects to help online students. These improvements include the clarification of information for online and hybrid courses, revisions to the email sent to waitlisted students, and an information page to display in CLASS-Web for students who enroll in online or hybrid courses.

In a recent meeting, the COOL also had CAS/ Electronic Systems Technology instructor Wayne Phillips demonstrate an interactive video he created using a new feature in Camtasia 8, which allows for the use of the Blackboard SCORM tool. Several members of the COOL also reported on the September Flex Day session which was a Roundtable Discussion for online faculty. Several innovative ideas were shared during the discussion, as well as the idea to hold a follow-up session on the October Flex Day during which instructors could demonstrate their online teaching ideas as well. We thank all who attended the Flex Day session and hope that we will have an opportunity to share ideas at future Flex Days.

Display Issues in Your Course site?

If you are experiencing display issues anywhere in a course site, there may be hidden html code or font within the a Text Box Editor that is causing the problem. When text is copied and pasted from one location to Blackboard (such as from a web page or from a Word document), hidden html and font are often copied over as well. Read more about this topic on our FAQ page.

Next Blackboard Upgrade

The COOL recently voted to look into upgrading Blackboard during Winter Break. Therefore, the next Blackboard upgrade is tentatively scheduled during the Winter Break following Fall 2013 and includes the new features and fixes of Service Packs 10, 11, 12, and 13. Faculty currently teaching with Blackboard can view details and video demonstrations of new functions within the BOLT (Blackboard Online Learning Team) site in Blackboard. More details about the upgrade will be sent to faculty teaching with Blackboard in the upcoming months.
