Students dismissed this week for progress or accademic dismissal will be allowed to stay in the classes they are enrolled in but will need to complete a return from dismissal form with A&R to add any classes or enroll for Summer of Fall. Fall dismissed students are not dropped from their pre-registered Spring classes but they can not add into Spring classes until they are readmitted (no probation contract needed). If you have questions, contact Julie at jmachado@chabotcollege.edu
NEW PARKING PERMIT PROCEDURES
Chabot Parking Permits are now available on CLASS-Web; it's one of the menu items under Student Services. For students to activate their permits, they must first select the "Purchase or Activate a Parking Permit" link on the Student & Financial Aid Menu or the Registration Menu. This will take them to the BossCars home page where they will see the "Activate a Permit" link. (See attached screenshots from CLASS-Web). Please contact Campus Safety if you any questions about parking permits.
Paraeducator ACOE Grant Recipients should contact Ginger Ripplinter for a temporary parking permit good until Feb 29th, while she works out a method to pay for regular parking permits. You can drop by her office in Buliding "B", Room 6 (in the portable buildings on the Depot Road side of campus) during normal business hours and she'll issue a permit. You will only need to show a picture ID to verify identity.

BUY YOUR BOOKS ONLINE!
The Chabot Bookstore has its own website at http://www.chabotbookstore.com
The easiest way to see what books a student needs is to sign onto ClassWeb, call up their class schedule. In the upper left hand corner of the page is a link that says, "Get your Chabot Books". Clicking on that link takes the student directly to our website and the page will list all the books required and recommended for the classes they are enrolled in.
Students can order for shipping. We charge a flat $7.95 for the first book and $1 for each additional book and UPS picks up every work day. We just ended our Pick up at Store option because tomorrow, Friday, is the last day to pick up books. All orders must be prepaid via MasterCard, Visa or Discover. Bankcards (ATM Cards) with MasterCard or Visa logos can also be used. The student can also print a book list if they want.

STATE BUDGET CUTS IMPACT COLLEGES
The January 16, 2008 Sacramento Bee reports that the California State University will close off applications for admission six months early, and plans to turn away 10,000 new students for the 2008-09 academic year. This decision follows the governor's proposed budget, which reduces state general fund support for both four-year university systems. If you want to apply to CSU for Fall '08, do so ASAP at www.csumentor.edu .
CSU vs. COMMUNITY COLLEGE: STATE COSTS
To enroll 10,000 students in the California State University for their first two years would cost the state $81.7 million (growth is funded at a marginal cost of $8,170 at CSU). Meanwhile, enrolling them in the California Community Colleges would cost around $49.1 million (growth is funded at a marginal rate of $4,910 at community colleges).

HARVARD GETS AFFORDABLE
The
link below is to the Harvard website. Here is what it said for families that
have an income of 60,000.
From this link:
http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu/
he new initiative is the latest chapter in Harvard's
systematic effort to increase affordability and widen access for qualified
students from across the economic spectrum. In the winter of 2004, under the
leadership of President Lawrence H. Summers, Harvard transformed the financial
aid landscape with its announcement that families with annual incomes below
$40,000 would not be expected to pay for their sons or daughters to go to
Harvard. The zero-contribution threshold was raised to $60,000 in 2006, with
further reductions in parental contributions for families with incomes up to
$80,000. Over the past three years, the number of students in these income
ranges has increased by 33 percent, representing a quarter of the entering Class
of 2011. See news article at

TEST TAKING TIPS
Here's some test tips from Peggy Gister & Marge Eberts' "Dear Teacher" column (dearteacher@aol.com ).
· There's no reason not to guess on multiple-choice tests, especially those that you take in school. By chance, you are likely to get some answers right and improve your score.
· Always read the question all the way through and then carefully read all the answer choices before selecting one.
· Don't spend too much time on a question that you can't answer or are unsure of. You can mark the question and return to it later if time allows.
· Circle, underline or fill in your answer neatly. Stray marks can result in wrong answers on machine-scored tests.
· If you have no idea which is the correct option, begin by eliminating the options that you know are incorrect and then choose your answer from the remaining ones.
· If you have no idea which is the correct answer and you can't eliminate any options, choose B or C, as some test writers tend to use those answers more frequently.
· Options that are noticeably longer than others often have added information to make the option correct.
· If two answers are similar except for one or two words, choose one of these answers.
· If you are completing a sentence, make sure the answer would make the sentence grammatically correct.
· Don't be afraid to change an answer; you are more likely to be right than wrong.
