WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

Chabot Sports Report (Oct. 4 edition)

FOOTBALL
The Gladiators (1-4) were rewarded for their tough schedule by moving into the NorCal rankings after their first win of the season over De Anza on Saturday.
Chabot is ranked tied for 13th with San Joaquin Delta in the Northern National Division Poll.
Quarterbacks Johnny O’Brien and Jack Moroney combined for five touchdown passes in the 55-49 win over De Anza at Gladiator Stadium, and Aaron Andrews had another monster game with three sacks, and is now ranked tied for second in the state in sacks with 7.5. Nohea Keahi is tied for sixth in the state in tackles with 10.6 a game.
Chabot will open play in the National-Valley Conference on Oct. 15 against Fresno (3-2) at Gladiator Stadium.
WRESTLING
The Gladiators are excited to be hosting Skyline on Wednesday night to open Coast Conference play. The matches will begin at 7 p.m.
Chabot has competed strongly in three tournaments. Minus four injured starters, Chabot still placed ninth in the West Hills Tournament in Lemoore as Gabriel Cardona (285 pounds) and Raymond Monela (125) both took fifth.
MEN’S SOCCER
After eight straight wins, Chabot suffered its first loss of the season, 2-0 against district rival Las Positas Friday night in Livermore.
The Gladiators (8-1, 0-1), ranked 14th in the Sept. 25 State Rankings, opened the week with a 5-1 rout of Gavilan, but ran into a tough assignment against the Hawks.
Las Positas star Marco Neves struck in the 20th minute, and Javier Hernandez rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute off a Matt Hafizi assist. The odds became increasingly stacked against the Gladiators in the showdown. They were forced to finish with just seven field players after absorbing three red cards.
Against Gavilan, highly capable Chabot goalkeeper Alejandro Cervantes made seven saves in the road romp. Cervantes leads the state in save percentage at .963 and is second in goals-against average at 0.19. Cristian Gonzalez had two goals, and Kevin Gonzalez had a goal and two assists to pace the attack. Isaac Mensah and Juan Lara had the Gladiators’ first two goals.
Brandon Sosa and Juan Calderon also had assists.
Chabot will host Foothill on Tuesday and Evergreen Valley on Friday, both games at 4 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY
David Frisbie and Jordan Kirby placed second and third as individuals, and the Las Positas men’s team finished a sturdy second in the Modesto Junior College Invitational.
American River won the team title with 41 points, and Las Positas (which has Chabot athletes on the squad) had 61 points.
Frisbie had a time of 21 minutes, 26.2 seconds on the 4-mile course, and Kirby finished in 21:34.7. The Hawks’ Bret Greene took 10th place in 22:07.0. David Yeshiwas was 12th in 22:10.1. Also cracking the top 50 for the Hawks were Jahdai Bolds  (41st, 23:48.4), Leonel Gomez (46th, 24:12.8), and Caleb Henze (50th, 24:24.1).
