WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

Chabot sports report, Dec. 5 edition

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Chabot had a busy and productive four-day run in the Contra Costa College tournament, winning three and dropping one.

The Gladiators (4-4), under coach Mark Anger, opened with a 98-81 win over Merritt Thursday, and then fell 60-56 to Fresno on Friday, walloped Ohlone 74-55 Saturday, and closed with a 92-77 win over Yuba Sunday.

Now that’s a strong body of work for a team building toward its Coast-North opener at powerful City College of San Francisco (6-1) on Jan. 4. The Rams have lost to Fresno 75-67, so the Gladiators expect to give them a run for their money in the conference.

Chabot is paced by sophomore forward De’Zire Hall, a Castlemont High graduate who averaged 23.9 points through the first six games (fifth in the state). She was also tied for fourth in the state in rebounds at 12.7 per game.

Sophomore guard Tyler Bell of American is No. 2 on the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game, to go with 6.0 assists and 6.2 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ariana Vargas of Washington High is No. 3 on the team in scoring at 12.0 ppg.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Gladiators (2-6) will travel to Hartnell Wednesday and Lassen Saturday after absorbing two tough defeats in the Cosumnes River tourney, falling to powerful Feather River 101-62 and Merced 102-89.

Former Vanden High star DeMarre Walker had 35 points and nine assists against Merced.

WRESTLING

With the top seven in each weight class earning trips to the CCCAA State Championships, Chabot showed impressive depth at the North Region Wrestling Championships at San Joaquin Delta in Stockton.

Zack Wally, a James Logan graduate, was the Gladiators' lone individual champion at 174 pounds, and Devon Lyle of Liberty was second at 133 pounds. Chabot will compete at the CCCAA Sate Championships Friday and Saturday at Victor Valley College.

Ten out of the 11 Chabot wrestlers qualified for state but only seven are assured spots in the competition. Chabot finished third as a team with 148 points, behind only champion Fresno City (218) and Sacramento City (194).
