WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

CHABOT FOOTBALL FALLS TO BUTTE

Once again, the Chabot College football team gave a spirited defensive effort, but a slow start on offense helped seal its fate in a 20-10 loss to Butte Saturday evening at Gladiator Stadium.
"Our defense showed a lot of heart and effort, but we need our offense to get going to give the guys a little break," said Chabot head coach Danny Calcagno, whose team fell to 0-3.
"We made some great plays out there and gave the team every opportunity to try to win the game."
Chabot got its first points on an Ivan Flores 40-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
The Gladiators slowed down the potent Roadrunners offense, but with Butte having a huge advantage in time of possession(37:40 to 22:20), the Chabot defense was simply worn out late in the game.
In three games, Chabot has managed just four touchdowns total, but the competition has been solid. The Gladiators' opponents, Siskiyous, DVC and Butte, all have 2-1 records.
"We need to have guys that can step up whenever their number is called and that has been a struggle for us," Calcagno said.
With Chabot down 20-3, quarterback Johnny O'Brien, who finished with
a season-high 210 yards on 19 for 28 passing, found track star Leroy Elliott for a 4-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone with 9:01 remaining. The Roadrunners got a couple of first downs to eat up some clock, but the Gladiators forced another punt.
Chabot took over at its own 12 with 5:09 left, but went three-and-out and punted it back to Butte once again. This time Butte converted a pair of third downs and was able to run out the clock.
Josh Revay led the Gladiators with six receptions for 80 yards, and Malik Henderson added five catches for 61 yards.
The Chabot running attack, which has been a staple for Calcagno, was held to just 78 yards. Henderson led Chabot in rushing yardage wit just one attempt -- a 26-yard run on an end around that helped set up Elliott's touchdown.
Elliott had three catches for 25 yards and has scored all four Chabot touchdowns this season.
Butte (2-1) started quickly, taking the opening kickoff and went 58 yards in eight plays that ended on a Clayton Welch quarterback sneak from the 1 for a 7-0 advantage just four minutes in.
The Gladiators' Amu Aukusitino picked off Welch on the Roadrunners next drive, and Chabot then forced three straight Butte punts.
While the defense was able to settle down, the offense of Chabot was still struggling to find any momentum. The Gladiators did get inside the Butte 30 on their second possession but Flores missed a 47-yard attempt.
Defensive lineman Aaron Andrews continued his strong start for Chabot with another sack and two more tackles-for-losses. Martin Fleming Jr. ran for a game-high 92 yards on 26 carries for the Roadrunners.
It doesn't get any easier for the Gladiators this week as they will travel to take on City College of San Francisco.
