WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

Chabot sports report, Jan. 30 edition

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The City College of San Francisco women’s basketball team broke open a close game against Chabot on Friday with a 16-4 run to start the second half on its way to a 93-65 victory.
Chabot (17-7, 5-2 Coast North) trailed by only six points (35-29) at halftime. But the visiting Rams’ ensuing run gave them a double-digit cushion for good, as they improved to 20-3 overall and 7-0 in the Coast-North.
“I don’t think we competed very well in the second half. We really have to get some stops,” Chabot coach Mark Anger said. “They made some adjustments on the screen-and-roll and we didn’t shoot the ball really well.”
It was a much different game than the one between the two teams on January 4. The Gladiators led by 10 points entering the final quarter before falling 86-79.
Friday’s game started promising for the Gladiators as Ugo Obiama sank a couple of three-pointers to give Chabot a 6-2 lead barely one minute into the first quarter. But the Rams then went on an 11-4 run. A layup by Tylore Bell gave Chabot a 21-20 lead with one minute, 26 seconds left in the first quarter, and the game was close throughout the first half.
But the Rams’ Gabrielle Vigil, who did not play in the Jan. 4 game, scored nine of her game-high 27 points in the third quarter. Teammate Destiny Kelly added 23 points in the victory.
Bell paced Chabot with 20 points, including 12 in the second half, and also had six rebounds. De’Zire Hall produced another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Bell and Obiama paced Chabot in the first half with eight points apiece.

In other action last week, the Chabot MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM (4-17, 1-6) fell to CCSF 103-75; and the Chabot baseball team opened the season with back-to-back losses to NorCal No. 1 Santa Rosa, 7-0 and 4-0, on Friday and Saturday.

The Chabot SOFTBALL TEAM split games against West Valley, falling 12-1 in five innings on Friday and rebounding for a 5-1 win on Saturday. Alina Garcia fired a three-hitter in the victory, striking out two and walking one. Kathleen Perscheid tripled and Desiree Gonzalez doubled for Chabot, and first baseman Raeanne Atfield was 2 for 3.
