Physics Faculty: Scott Hildreth

Scott Hildreth has been teaching astronomy and physics at Chabot College since 1989; he also taught at UC Berkeley and CSU East Bay (nee CSU Hayward), and worked as an Associate Editor for the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, a wonderful non-profit group in San Francisco dedicated to sharing the science and wonder of Astronomy to educators and the public.  Prior to working in education, Scott worked as an engineer and then manager for IBM, and as a manager for a start-up relational database software vendor.  His undergraduate degree was in Mathematics at UC Davis and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and his graduate degree was in Astronomy at UC Berkeley.

Scott's primary research interests are in online educational technologies.  Working with Pearson Publishing, Scott has been a Faculty Advisor in Physics and Astronomy for its Mastering Platform.  He was one of the first to offer a completely online class in Astronomy in the state of California (1995), and one of the first to teach online at Chabot College.  At Chabot, Scott has helped to found and then chair the Technology and Distance Education committees, has chaired the Facilities & Sustainability Committee, and currently co-chairs the Committee On Online Learning (COOL).

He is married with two energetic sons and an even more energetic spouse who is an artist.  His favorite quotes are many, including:

"Technology doesn't teach - we do."

What you need, above all else, is a love for your subject, whatever it is. You've got to be so deeply in love with your subject that when curve balls are thrown, when hurdles are put in place, you've got the energy to overcome them. Neil deGrasse Tyson
