About The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

All California public school students must satisfy the CAHSEE requirement, as well as all other state and local requirements, in order to receive a high school diploma. The CAHSEE requirement can be satisfied by passing the exam or, for students with disabilities, receiving a local waiver pursuant to Education Code Section 60851(c).

The CAHSEE has two parts: English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The ELA part addresses state content standards through grade ten. In reading, this includes vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, and analysis of information and literary texts. In writing, this covers writing strategies, applications, and the conventions of English (e.g. grammar, spelling, and punctuation). The mathematics part of the CAHSEE addresses state standards in grades six and seven and Algebra I. The exam includes statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurement and geometry, mathematical reasoning, and algebra. Students are also asked to demonstrate a strong foundation in computation and arithmetic, including working with decimals, fractions, and percents.

About the Second Wind CAHSEE Prep Program

This program is designed to support families in the Chabot service area who did not receive their high school diploma because they did not pass one or both of the sections of the High School Exit Exam.  Most recently, reports estimate that nearly 100,000 Californian seniors DID NOT pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).  This includes approximately 1,300 students from seven Southern Alameda County high schools which our project is targeting.

The focus and philosophy of the Second Wind Project is dedicated to the concept that ALL students are capable of academic success if given "equal opportunity" to ALL of the tools that are available. Those tools include outstanding instructional materials, appropriate orientation to the exam's content and structure, and well-trained instructors and tutors who also act as positive role models of academic achievement.

Chabot College and The Second Wind Project will help students pass the CAHSEE and provide support through:

  • FREE hands-on learning

  • FREE personal career and college counseling/support

  • FREE classes and study materials

  • FREE bus transportation assistance upon request

  • FREE Childcare upon request (*during class time only)

  • PAID stipend for perfect attendance

Who can participate?

It is designed to provide those students who were scheduled to graduate from high School in June of 2008 and did not pass one or both parts of the California High School Exit Exam, better known as CAHSEE.
