Young Minor Concurrent Enrollment Program

Young Minor Students are those students in grades 3rd through those who will be entering 9th grade in the upcoming school year. Students in high school, who are currently in 9th through 12th grade, should the see the high school concurrent enrollment information page.

General Rules Regarding Conditions of
ENROLLMENT OF YOUNG MINOR STUDENTS AT CHABOT COLLEGE

All courses at Chabot College are college-level courses. Attendance by Young Minors at Chabot College is intended as a source of educational enrichment for students who are currently excelling in their school coursework. Chabot courses are not appropriate for students who need remedial assistance in specific subjects. Young Minor students are held to the same standards as all other students in the class. They may enroll only in advanced scholastic courses. ALL Chabot College courses are taught at the college level, and minor students are expected to meet the same requirements and to be held to the same standards as ALL other college students in the class. Faculty do NOT change course materials to adapt to young minors. Enrollment in Physical Education or basic skills courses will not be allowed. Enrollment by Young Minor students at Chabot is restrictive and must be jointly determined and approved by the college administration and the student's school principal, counselor and/or teacher. Registration into classes is given on a first-come, first-served basis and seating is limited.

FEES FOR YOUNG MINOR CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT

There is no per unit charge for classes, however, the following fees are charged: Fees for Young Minor students are as follow:

FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS

$13.00 Student Health Services Fee (MANDATORY) +  $ 3.00 Mailing Fee = $16.00 TOTAL

SUMMER SEMESTER

$9.00 Student Health Services Fee (MANDATORY) +$3.00 Mailing Fee =  $12.00 TOTAL 

ADVISORY TO SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND TO PARENTS OF YOUNG MINOR CHILDREN APPLYING FOR CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT AT CHABOT COLLEGE

It is important that school officials, and the parents of young minor children, understand that as students at Chabot College, the children are entering a college environment, and that carries with it situations, all of which cannot be anticipated. The average age of the Chabot College student has increased in recent years, and the content and atmosphere of classes will frequently reflect this diverse adult population. Some of the possible circumstances are noted below:

Neither is this list meant to create undue concern for parents or the minor students – only to serve as a precaution to allow you to manage your particular situation so that your child will gain the academic benefits and have a safe, positive educational experience at Chabot College.

Chabot College Young Minor Students

Application and Enrollment Process

STEP 1: Get a Young Minor Enrollment packet and a Chabot College Class Schedule from Room 208, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

STEP 2: VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!! Pick out 1 or 2 classes from the Chabot College Class Schedule and write the Course Registration Number and description down on Page 3 of the Young Minor Enrollment Packet.

STEP 3: Complete the Young Minor Enrollment packet and get the approval signatures from the parents, student’s principal, and student’s teacher.

STEP 4: Return the completed, signed Young Minor Enrollment Packet to Room 208 only between the hours of 10:00-3:00, Monday – Friday. Allow at least 30 minutes for it to be reviewed. Call 510-723-6743 first to make sure someone will be there.

STEP 5: The application will be reviewed by the Office of the Vice President and, if approved, forwarded to Admissions & Records for approval. This process takes at least 48 hours. You will be instructed when to return to campus to apply for admission into Chabot College in person in Building 100 to get a Student W#. Allow at least 45 minutes and be prepared to pay the mailing fee and the Student Health Center fee. If the student is NOT taking a Math or Science class PROCEED TO STEP 8.

STEP 6: If the student is planning to take a Math or Science class: Take the Math Assessment test in Room 1840 according to the testing schedule that can be found in the Chabot College Class Schedule. You can only take the test AFTER all of the paperwork has been completed AND submitted to Room 208 at LEAST 48 hours before the testing date.

STEP 7: Call 510-723-6743 24-hours after completing the Math Assessment test or check CLASS-Web for test results.

STEP 8: Register for classes in person and pay the $13.00 Health Services fee (for Fall and Spring semesters), or the $9.00 Health Services Fee (for Summer semester) and the $3.00 Mailing Fee (all semesters) in Building 100. Allow at least 45 minutes.

STEP 9: Attend class on the first day.
