Respondus Overview, Conditions of License, Technical
Support, and Installation Instructions
DIRECTIONS: In order for a faculty member to
install the Respondus software at home, Respondus
requires that each instructor review everything on this webpage,
which are the "Conditions of License."
The page concludes with the
steps on how to obtain/download the software.
Respondus is a Windows application that enhances the functionality
and usability of Blackboard's exam and survey tools. It is a tool
that for creating and managing exams, quizzes, and surveys that can
be published directly into Blackboard. Information about the
Respondus software is available at
www.respondus.com.
During the summer of 2008, Chabot College obtained a campus-wide
license for the Respondus software. This is available as a free
download to all Chabot College faculty may be installed on Chabot
College owned PC's and on privately owned PC's. Please note that the
Campus-Wide version of Respondus is for use by current instructors
only (scheduled to teach a future term or currently teaching). If
you leave Chabot you must immediately uninstall it from all PCs on
which you had installed them and on which you had authorized their
installation. The campus-wide license of Respondus will expire on
July 31st each year. Several weeks prior to the expiration date,
staff will email registered users with
instructions for obtaining and installing the new password.
Use of the Respondus products included in this license is subject
to all of the following conditions:
- The products may be installed on Chabot College owned PC's and
on privately owned PC's. Only Computer Support will install software
on local machines. Please note that Computer Support receives a lot
of such requests and that you should expect several days or weeks
before the software may be installed. Please refer to installation
instructions below for more details.
- The use of the products under this license is restricted to
Chabot College-related purposes ONLY. (Note that this applies
regardless of how the installation media is obtained and who owns or
uses the PC on which the products are installed.)
- The products may be used for Chabot College academic and
administrative purposes.
- The Campus-Wide version of Respondus is for use by current
instructors only (scheduled to teach a future term or currently
teaching). When you leave Chabot College you lose the right to use
the Campus-Wide version of Respondus, and you must immediately
uninstall it from all PCs on which you had installed them and on
which you had authorized their installation.
- You may NOT resell this license and/or the products it covers.
- Our license DOES permit you to install a copy of the Respondus
software on a home computer. However, please note that you are not
permitted to provide the Respondus software or the password
information to anyone who is not affiliated with our institution.
Such an action is a violation of our licensing agreement with
Respondus and is also illegal.
- The campus-wide license of Respondus will expire on July 31st
each year. Several weeks prior to the expiration date, staff will email registered users with instructions for
obtaining and installing the new password.
- Our license with Respondus, Inc. does NOT permit instructors to
obtain support directly from Respondus. Also, except for on-campus
installation of the software, DO NOT CONTACT ITS/Computer Support
for problems. If you are having a technical problem or need further
assistance, direct your questions to the
Blackboard
Support Request. If our staff is unable
to solve a particular question or problem, we will contact Respondus,
Inc. on your behalf. Please allow 24 hours during normal business
hours to receive a response.
- Please note that we are limited to the extent of support we can
provide for use of Respondus on personal computers, including
installation and troubleshooting. We will attempt to troubleshoot
the problem but cannot guarantee a resolution.
To check for a Respondus update at any time, go to the Help menu
and select the 'Check for Update' option. Each year, the software
will prompt users for the new password throughout the month of
August during a "grace period"

demo movies!
If you are having a technical problem or need further assistance,
submit a
Support Request. Please allow 24 hours
during normal business hours to receive a response.
Please note that:
- We are limited to the extent of support we can provide for the
use of Respondus on personal computers, including installation and
troubleshooting. We will attempt to troubleshoot the problem but
cannot guarantee a resolution.
- Our license with Respondus, Inc. does NOT permit instructors to
obtain support directly from Respondus, Inc. If our staff is unable
to solve a particular question or problem, we will contact Respondus,
Inc. on your behalf.
- Except for requesting on-campus installation, do not contact
ITS/Computer support for assistance.
The minimum hardware and software requirements for Respondus:
- Operating System: Windows 7, Vista, XP, ME, 2000, 98 (Apple
Macintosh users, please see the expanded note below).
- Memory: 32 MB RAM minimum.
- Hard Disk Space: 10 MB of free hard disk space for program
files. Download time should take less than two minutes with a
standard internet connection.
- Monitor: 800x600 minimum (1024x768 recommended).
Apple Macintosh users: According to the
system requirements posted on the Respondus website, Apple
Macintosh users can run Respondus using Windows emulation software
such as Microsoft's Virtual PC. Another recommendation by a Chabot
faculty member is a product called
Crossover
Mac by CodeWeavers.
Please note that Chabot Web Services staff are not not familiar
with the software listed above, so you are installing at your own
risk. We recommend that only users experienced installing software
on their Mac's attempt to install Respondus using these methods. In
addition, Macintosh users are encouraged to check with Apple for
other recommendations for installing Windows-based programs.
To request the installation of the Respondus software on your
Chabot campus computer, please submit a request to Computer Support
at phone extension x1715 or visit the
Computer Support website.
Please note that Computer Support receives a lot of such requests
and that you should expect several days or weeks before the software
may be installed.

technical problem regarding the installation of Respondus on your
campus computer, contact

If you are having technical problems when you use Respondus on
either computer, submit

Installation on a personal computer can be done at any time and
only takes a few minutes. Installation consists of two steps:
- Download the software (see below)
- Request for Respondus Software Installation
and Password from the Chabot Respondus Administrator
Note: If you already own an individual copy of
Respondus (versus the Campus-wide version that we license),
Respondus recommends that you uninstall that program prior to
installing the Campus-wide version.
Step 1: Download the Respondus Software
To begin the download of Respondus, click on the download button directly
below.
NOTE: THIS DOWNLOAD IS FOR PERSONAL COMPUTERS ONLY.
CLICK HERE FOR CHABOT COMPUTER INSTALLATION.
Respondus 4.0.4.00 Setup Application:
- You will be prompted to "Run", "Save", or "Cancel". Click Run. The program
will begin to download. (The process should take less than 5 minutes.)
- A "Security Warning" screen may appear. If so, click Run.
- On the "Welcome to Installation Program for Respondus" screen, click OK.
- On the "WinZip Self-Extractor" screen, click Unzip.
- After the files are unzipped, "27 file(s) unzipped successfully" will
appear. Click OK.
- On the "Welcome" screen, click Next.
- Read the Software License Agreement. If you agree, click Yes.
- On the "Choose Destination Location" screen, click Next.
- On the "Choose Documents Folder" screen, click Next.
- You will be prompted to "Install Respondus Equation Editor". This step is
optional. If you do not plan to use equations, click No. If you choose to
install the editor, click Yes and follow the instructions on your screen.
On the "Setup Complete" screen, click Finish.
- A new icon for Respondus should appear on your desktop.
Step 2: Request the Respondus Software Installation and Password Information
(for installation on a personal computer)
To obtain the Respondus software installation and password information for
your personal computer, submit the Request for Respondus
Software Installation and Password form. The Chabot Web Services Coordinator
will send the information within 24 hours during normal working hours.
