Music 24A and 24B:  Music Practicum, Voice

2.  Course Objectives:
a.  Students improve all aspects of their vocal technique.
b.  Students increase their vocal repertoire.
c.  Students prepare all of the jury repertoire,  memorized accurately and with improved understanding of vocal technique, effective performance skills, and creative interpretation of text.
Course Description:
To work with the individual singer in acquiring vocal and interpretive skills, and the knowledge of the repertoire necessary for performance and/or teaching.

3. Instruction:
One ½ hour  of private vocal instruction per week.  Each private voice lesson will consist of focused work in individual vocal problems and preparation of song repertoire.  The vocalises and vocal literature studied in the private lesson should be the foundation for the student's DAILY practice sessions.

4. Mid-Term Exam
A mid-term exam will consist of at least two songs.  The student must have one song memorized and at performance level. The remaining song need not be memorized but learned and free of musical and diction errors.  Both songs should be delivered in a way that demonstrates a musical and dramatic understanding of the piece.  The mid-term exam will count for %20 of your final semester grade.  You will be graded on pitch accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, diction, vocal quality/technical growth, and dramatic presentation.  This will take place during the studio class on October 30.
5. STUDIO CLASSES:
Studio classes take place after lessons from 2-3:30 PM on the following dates:
Friday, February 26
Friday, March 26
Friday, May, 14
You must attend at least two of the three classes.  These classes give the students the opportunity to perform repertoire in front of their peers and work in a masterclass setting.
6. E-MAIL and COMMUNICATION:
All students are required to have e-mail and voice mail that they check regularly.  There are many services which offer free e-mail addresses, and you may access your e-mail at the library if you do not have your own computer.  I expect all calls and e-mails to be responded to within 48 hours.  Failure to do so  demonstrates a lack of participation and will effect your grade.  If you have temporarily lost access to your phone and/or e-mail, you must contact me immediately and let me know how I can reach you.

7. Progression of Study
Semester I:
Required texts: none.  Each student will be individually assigned the literature to be studied for the semester.  At that time, purchase of certain volumes of music will be necessary.  First semester will concentrate on basic vocal technique.  A minimum of three (3) songs  are to be memorized.  Songs will be selected from the 17th and 18th century, English and American song literature and if the student has a facility with other languages, German, Spanish, and French songs may be assigned.

Semester II:
Same requirements as Semester I.

Semester III & IV:
A natural progression of technical and interpretive study, there will be expanded emphasis on vocal agility.  Required songs:  a minimum of four (4) songs for B.A. are to be memorized each semester.  Based on the language abilities and vocal improvement, songs will be chosen from a variety of languages including the German lied and the French art song.

9. Evaluation:
Due to the laboratory nature of this class, students will be graded on lesson participation and preparedness.  For the Final Exam it will be necessary for each student to participate in a jury.  At that time students are required to have 3 selections memorized.  At the jury students will be required to sing ALL the memorized selections.

10. Cancellation Policy:
Students taking applied voice lessons are expected to attend each scheduled lesson.  If it is necessary to miss a lesson because of illness or a family emergency, the instructor should be notified 24 hours in advance.  A lesson will be rescheduled at the discretion of the instructor.
