MS Word Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I turn off AutoFormat?
  2. Yes, but, unfortunately, it’s not just one button. Pull down Format menu, go to AutoFormat. Click the Options button. Select AutoFormat tab, deselect everything under "Apply." Select "AutoFormat As You Type" tab, deselect everything under "Apply as you Type." Click OK in the AutoCorrect dialog box. Click OK in the AutoFormat dialog box. If you wish to reselect AutoFormat, go back and just reselect those options.

  3. How to change spacing (single, 1.5, double)?
  4. Pull down Format menu, go to Paragraph, in Spacing section, click on "Line Spacing" box to select desired spacing. Click OK.

  5. How to change the formatting of a document (saving in a format other than Word)?
  6. Pull down File menu, go to Save As…. In Save File As Type menu box, select desired format [the most universal format is Rich Text Format (RTF) which preserves much of the original formatting] Text format is a good choice too, since it can be translated by any word processor, but your document will revert to single space with no indentation

  7. What if I make a mistake? Using the Undo function.

If you do something you didn’t mean to do or the autoformat function does something you didn’t want it to do, pull down the Edit menu, go to Undo. Each time you select Undo, the computer takes back the last thing that was done. It can go back numerous steps until you get where you want to be. If only life were that simple!
