Business 22 - Introduction to Management Instructor: Dmitriy Kalyagin dkalyagin@chabotcollege.edu |
Welcome to the online Business 22. I am your instructor, Dmitriy Kalyagin. Please read general information below to find out if this course is for you and how to begin. If this is your first online course, please check out our online orientation for students taking classes with Blackboard at www.chabotcollege.edu/online/orientations/
How does an Online Course work?
For this course, students go online and use a Course Management System, Blackboard, to review learning materials, submit assignments, take quizzes, exams, and communicate with their instructor and other students. There are NO on campus meetings for this class. All assignments, quizzes, exams, and activities will be completed online and submitted through the Blackboard system or e-mail.
The Blackboard system for BUS-22 Intro to Management features all information to guide you through the course: the syllabus, class schedule, list of assignments, lectures, chapter materials, quizzes, discussion boards, exams, e-lectures, PowerPoint slides, etc. It is absolutely crucial to become familiar with the system and its components. You need to have the self-discipline to log into the online course management system at least THREE times a week, read your textbook, and complete all assignments required. If you do not sign in the system the required number of times, your grade might be adjusted by the instructor. The instructor can and will track both the amount of time you spend in the system and the number of times you log into the system.
Business 22 online is a baccalaureate-level course and is equivalent to the on-campus sections. The online version will cover the same material as a traditional lecture course. Your academic transcript will not show the modality of the courses completed (on campus, online, or hybrid).
As a 3-unit course, academic requirements are to spend 2 hours of homework for every academic unit. Since you do not meet on campus for 3 hours per week and the class is short-term (15 weeks instead of 18 weeks --> so it is twice faster than a regular semester), you are expected to spend about 10-11 hours per week studying for this course.
Is this course for me?
This course is for business majors or others who are interested in the field of Business Administration and feel comfortable using email, an internet browser, etc. Take a quick assessment geared for online courses. If you do not feel you have enough self-motivation and self-discipline to take the online course, you are encouraged to take a traditional, face-to-face version of this class.
What are the technical requirements?
You should have some experience surfing the web and sending e-mails with attachments. It also would be helpful if you like and feel comfortable being online. You will need reliable online access (dial ups are very slow!), Windows 98 or later operating system, MS Word, as well as a standard browser - Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox (seems to be most compatible with the current version of Blackboard), Chrome. It is helpful to also have PowerPoint and speakers.
You can access the course from any computer. You are responsible for arranging the use of an alternative computer (including public library and/or Chabot library lab) in case you experience technical difficulties with you home computer or internet connection. Having technical problems is not an excuse for not completing the class activities. No time extension will be given because of technical problems you may encounter.
Is there a book?
Yes. You will purchase the following text, Kinicki, Williams. Management: A Practical Introduction, Customized Text, ISBN 978-0-0949172, McGraw-Hill, 4th ed. Or you can use the full-text version of 4th edition of the same textbook (ISBN 13-9780073381480).
You can find great additional material at the textbook’s website: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073381489/information_center_view0/Do I have to log in at certain times?
No, but you will need to log in several times (at least 3) a week, at a time convenient for you.
To log into the Blackboard, you will need to use a username and a password that should have been mailed to you by the college. Every student has been assigned a new ID number different from their SSN. The new User Identification Number is a unique number beginning with a W and containing 8 digits. If you forget your new ID, you may log into Class-Web with your old Student ID and click the What's my new User ID link. Your temporary password is the first two letters of your first name, followed by the first two letters of your last name (all lowercase) followed by the last four digits of your new User Identification Number.
For example: Maria Valdez with a User Identification Number of W12345678:
USERNAME: W12345678 (the W is uppercase)
PASSWORD: mava5678 (all lowercase letters + last four digits).
You will be able to change the password after logging into Blackboard for the first time.
When you are ready to log into Blackboard, please go to http://clpccd.blackboard.com. This is an entry page for our class. You will type in the user name and a password. The platform will open a welcome page three menu tabs at the top. You will need to click on the "Courses" tab. Then you will see our class' title "Business 22 Sec EN1" on that page. Click on the course's name to get to the virtual classroom. You will be automatically taken to my announcement/welcome letter. Read it and start activities in accordance with the announcement.
