How does an Online Course work?
For this course, students go online and use a Course
Management System called Blackboard, and Connect homework Manager to submit
assignments, take quizzes, exams, and communicate with their instructor and
other students. There are NO on campus meetings for this class. All
assignments, tutorials, exams, and activities will be completed online and
submitted through the Blackboard and Homework manager system.
The Blackboard system for Business1A Sec EN1 Spring 2010 features all information to guide you through the course: the syllabus, class schedule, list of assignments, discussion boards, midterm exams (theory portion) and other supplementary resources. It is absolutely crucial to become familiar with the system and its components. You need to have the self-discipline to log into the online course management system at least 4-6 times a week, study your textbook, and complete all assignments required. If you do not sign in the system the required number of times, your grade will be adjusted by the instructor. The instructor can and will track both the amount of time you spend in the system and the number of times you log into the system.
Business 1A online is a transferable course and is equivalent to the on-campus sections. The online version will cover the same material as a traditional lecture course.
Is this course for me?
This course is for business majors or others who are interested in the field of
Accounting and Business and feel comfortable using email, an internet browser,
etc.
Take a quick assessment at
http://www.cerrocoso.edu/studentservices/heather/quizaccess.htm geared
for online courses. If you do not feel you have enough self-motivation
and self-discipline to take the online course, you are encouraged to take a
traditional, face-to-face version of this class.
What are the technical requirements?
You can access the course from any computer. You are responsible for
arranging the use of an alternative computer (including public library and/or
Chabot library lab) in case you experience technical difficulties with you home
computer or internet connection. Having technical problems is not an excuse for
not completing the class activities. No time extension will be given because of
technical problems you may encounter. For any questions pertaining to Blackboard
or online courses in general, go to
http://www.chabotcollege.edu/online/
Is there a book?
You must purchase a special shrink wrapped textbook package for
this course. The Chabot College ISBN is 9780077989682. You can buy
the package online at
http://www.chabotbookstore.com/home.aspx The package includes:
This package comes with Connect Plus Access Code (costs approximately $95 if bought alone) which gives you access to ebook and other useful online resources.
Buying the code online:
There are two types of Connect codes - Connect ($50 app) and Connect PLUS ($95 app). Connect PLUS code has ebook integration where as the Connect does not have this feature. To avoid frustration and delays, you should buy the shrink wrapped package from Chabot bookstore. If you buy the used book cheaper elsewhere, you will need to buy at least the Connect code online which alone will cost approximately $50.00 and is REQUIRED for the course.
Do I have to log in at certain times?
No, but you will need to log in several times (at least 4-6) a week, at a
time convenient for you.
1. First of all, if you have never taken classes at Chabot before, you will need to apply for admissions at Chabot college. The application can be filled out online. You can also apply in person, by visiting Building 100, Admissions and Records (A&R).
2. After your application is processed (usually takes 2-5 business days from the moment your application is received at A&R), you can register for the class. This can be done either in person, on the phone (510-781-1300), or over the web.
3. Then, go to the Chabot's http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DistanceEd/ and read through the short modules to become familiar with the course management system, "Blackboard."
4. To log into the Blackboard, you will need to use a username and a password that should have been mailed to you by the college. Every student has been assigned a new ID number different from their SSN. The new User Identification Number is a unique number beginning with a W and containing 8 digits. If you forget your new ID, you may log into Class-Web with your old Student ID and click the What's my new User ID link. Your temporary password is the first two letters of your first name, followed by the first two letters of your last name (all lowercase) followed by the last four digits of your new User Identification Number.
For example: Maria Valdez with a User Identification Number of W12345678:
USERNAME: W12345678 (the W is uppercase)
PASSWORD: mava5678 (all lowercase letters + last four digits).
You will be able to change the password after logging into Blackboard for the first time.
6. When you are ready to log into Blackboard, please go to http://clpccd.blackboard.com/. This is an entry page for our class. You will type in the user name and a password. The platform will open a welcome page three menu tabs at the top. You will need to click on the "Courses" tab. Then you will see your class' title Business1A Sec EN1 Spring 2010 on that page. Click on the course's name to get to the virtual classroom. You will be automatically taken to my announcement/welcome letter. Read it and start activities in accordance with the announcement.
7. As soon as you access the course, you will need to
update your e-mail address to be able to
communicate with the instructor. Students now have the option of receiving
Blackboard emails through their Zonemail account, or through a personal account
of their choosing. If you prefer not to receive Blackboard emails through your
zonemail account, follow these simple steps on Class-Web to replace Zonemail
with your own personal email address.
1) Login to Class-Web
2) Select "What is my email address?"
3) Select "Update Email Address"
4) Under "Type of E-mail to Insert" select "Email for Blackboard" and press
"Submit"
5) Enter personal email address in the field next to "E-mail" and press "Submit"
**Students will automatically receive school emails through
their Zonemail account unless changed to a personal account.
8. You also can change your password from the one developed for you ("mava5678" - see above). Click Personal Information, then click Change Password. Enter a unique password that you will remember in the Password and Verify Password fields. Click submit at the bottom. Click OK.
9. You are working with two software programs (Bb and Connect). Bookmark both of these urls for easy access throughout the semester.
If you have questions about Blackboard, including all technical questions, or still have difficulties logging in after reading the material, please go to http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DistanceEd/help/ and fill out a request form.
Connect (Homework Management system)
Connect (Homework Management system) is an eLearning product from the authors of your textbook. You will be doing chapter assignments, part B of the midterms and midterm A reviews in Connect. Connect has a specific url for your class that you will log into every time. Do not go into Connect thru Bb as you you will have a smaller screen and might run into technical issues. Your textbook package will include an access code for Connect PLUS. You will register for Connect in the beginning of the semester and set up your account.
