The Chabot College Foundation Founders Circle

The Founders Circle was created to honor individuals who include Chabot College in their estate plan or in a planned gift arrangement. It is named for those benefactors who know that the future depends on the generous support of donors willing to leave a part of their estate to this wonderful institution. Founder Circle members demonstrate exemplary leadership, dedication, and personal commitment to the College inspiring the Chabot College Foundation to establish the Circle. This group is a source of inspiration to those who care about high-quality college education.

Benefits of Membership

Founders Circle gifts help provide scholarships for students and vital support for the College's outstanding faculty. These planned gifts also help to endow buildings and enhance academic programs and services.

Founders Circle Membership

Membership in the Chabot College Foundation Founders Circle is offered to all individuals who have made a provision in their estate plans for Chabot College, regardless of the amount.
The following are examples of legacy gifts:

Bequest in a will or living trust

Naming the Chabot College Foundation a beneficiary of a retirement plan, IRA, or insurance policy
Arranging for a Charitable Gift Annuity through the Chabot College Foundation
Outright gift of a life insurance policy
Gift of life estate in home or farm
Charitable remainder trust Charitable lead trust

Designating Your Legacy Gift

Bequests and planned gifts benefiting Chabot College should name the Chabot College Foundation as the beneficiary. The Chabot Foundation receives and administers gifts and bequests on behalf of Chabot College.

The Chabot College Foundation can assist you and your advisors in developing an estate gift plan that serves you and the College. In addition, the Chabot College Foundation has a Planned Giving Council of professionals who offer free consultation to individuals who wish to consider making a gift to the Chabot Foundation.

How to Designate Your Bequest

Please note that the following sample language is intended only as a general guide for those preparing wills or trusts. All bequests to Chabot College should be designated with the Chabot College Foundation as the beneficiary. The Chabot College Foundation is recognized as the official organization to receive and administer gifts and bequests on behalf of Chabot College.

Unrestricted Bequest

"I give (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) to the Chabot College Foundation, a non-profit California corporation with its principal offices in Hayward, California, in the County of Alameda, to be used for the benefit of the College in such a manner as the Chabot College Foundation Board of Directors may elect."

Restricted Bequest

"I give (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) to the Chabot College Foundation, a non-profit California corporation with its principal offices in Hayward, California, in the County of Alameda for the purposes of establishing the following restricted fund (indicate purpose)."

"If in the future the Board of Directors of the Chabot College Foundation, in concert with the President and academic leadership of Chabot College determines that the specific purposes for which this fund was established no longer pertain or the programs benefiting from these funds no longer exist, the Board may designate that the funds be used for those purposes and programs at Chabot College which are most closely aligned with the original intent. Such re-designation of funds would be allowed only to the extent permitted by California law and the policies and procedures of Chabot College."

Restricted Named Endowment Fund (Perpetual Resource)

"I hereby leave (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) of my estate to the Chabot College Foundation of Hayward, California, to constitute an endowment fund which shall be used to establish a (indicate purpose such as scholarship, program, or academic department fund). This fund shall be known as (indicate proposed name of fund). For the purpose of investment, this fund may be combined with other funds of the Chabot College Foundation and administered according to the Chabot College Foundation policies and procedures."

"If in the future the Board of Directors of the Chabot College Foundation, in concert with the President and academic leadership of Chabot College, determines that the specific purposes for which this endowment was established no longer pertain or the programs benefiting from these funds no longer exist, the Board may designate that the funds be used for those purposes and programs at Chabot College which are most closely aligned with the original intent. Such re-designation of funds would be allowed only to the extent permitted by California law and the policies and procedures of Chabot College."

Simple Residuary Bequest

"I give the rest of the property I own at my death to the Chabot College Foundation of Hayward, California, in the County of Alameda, to be used for unrestricted purposes."

Contingency Bequest

"If (indicate name or names) is not living after the date of my death, I give the remainder of the property I own to the Chabot College Foundation to be used for unrestricted purposes."

Establishing an Endowment

The Benefits of an Endowment

Many donors find that their philanthropic wishes can be met by establishing an endowment through the Chabot College Foundation. Endowments are permanent funds from which only the income is used. The annual investment income, or interest, is used for the purpose designated by the donor. Additional gifts may be made to the fund to increase the principal and thereby increase the annual investment income. Endowments represent rewarding gift opportunities because they offer the donor the satisfaction of knowing that his or her gift will continue working for future generations.

How an Endowment is Established

The endowed fund may be established with a contribution in the form of cash, appreciated securities, or other charitable gifts such as a bequest. The fund is invested by the Chabot College Foundation, which serves as a steward of the endowed funds. The Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions to the Chabot College Foundation are tax-deductible as allowable by law.

The Purposes of an Endowed Fund

With the assistance of a Chabot College development officer, donors can specify the details of the fund's objectives. The following ideas are a sampling of what an endowed fund can accomplish to enhance educational excellence at Chabot. Income from endowments will enable the College to support undergraduate scholarships, graduate student fellowships, professorships, chairs, and promising research. Funds range from $10,000 to $1 million:

An annual student scholarship to financially assist those students attending a particular program at Chabot College.
A multi-year award for distinguished students.
Provide funds for faculty development to aid the scholarly, professional and personal growth of Chabot faculty.
Create a faculty recognition award to acknowledge the contributions of an outstanding faculty member.
Establish a fund for a distinguished visiting scholar that finances the annual cost of a visiting scholar in an academic field.
A fund to support a specific campus, academic department, program, equipment or service.
Create a fund to support an annual conference or lecture series.
A fund to provide additional resources for the library.
A fully endowed faculty chair that provides an annual salary, benefits, and scholarly expenses for a distinguished teacher/scholar.
