Emergency Contact

The Chabot College Safety and Security Department public office is located in room #2302 at the southeast corner of the first floor of building 2300 (adjacent to the cafeteria). This office is open from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If the office is closed, the on-duty safety officer can be contacted by telephone in the following ways:

• For emergencies, dial 911 from any phone
• Activate any one of the emergency call boxes located throughout the campus.
• Dial extension 6923 or 6666 from any college phone.
• From any off-campus telephone dial (510) 723-6923.

Reporting Emergencies, Crimes, Suspicious Activities or Safety Hazards

For emergencies, dial 911 from any phone.

All members of our campus community are expected to share responsibility in reporting emergencies, crimes, suspicious activities, and safety hazards to keep our campus safe for all.

All emergencies will be investigated immediately by Campus Safety staff, including medical emergencies, accidents, or catastrophes.

Crimes against persons and violent crimes will be investigated on campus by the assigned campus police officer of the Hayward Police Department or a police officer summoned by a campus safety officer. A campus safety officer will investigate crimes against property unless the incident involves a substantial loss or theft of a motor vehicle.

Suspicious activities and safety hazards will be investigated promptly by the on-duty campus safety officer who will delegate the appropriate resources to resolve the incident. Interagency coordination and responsibilities are written pursuant to California Education Code section 67381.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

I.    Fire/Bomb Threat

• When the alarm sounds, DO NOT PANIC. Leave by the nearest exit or stairway.
• DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.
• All persons will evacuate to at least 150 feet from the buildings.
• Special precautions must be taken to ensure that persons who have impaired hearing are notified and persons with disabilities are assisted as appropriate.

II.    Earthquake

Special precautions must be taken to ensure that persons who have impaired hearing are notified and persons with disabilities are assisted as appropriate.

• If indoors, stay indoors. Take precautions:
  • Get under a table or desk
  • Stand in an interior doorway
  • Kneel down in a corner of the room
  • Hold your hands or books over your head
  • Stay away from windows
  • Wait until the earthquake is over
  • Use stairways, NOT ELEVATORS, to evacuate
  • Cautiously leave building
  • Watch out for falling roof tile  
  •                          
• If outside, move away from buildings and utility wires. Once in the open, stay there until the earthquake is over. DO NOT GO BACK INSIDE.

IIII. Shooting/ Sniper/Violent Armed Individual

During incidents or situations where a subject is armed with a deadly weapon other than a firearm or suspected explosive device, such as a knife, ax, or club, and is threatening or attacking others, the following actions should be taken:   

                                        

• The type of shooting incident/situation will determine the appropriate response.
• If you are outdoors, immediately seek cover and move away from the line of fire.
• If you are indoors, immediately get down, move away from all windows and if possible, block or secure the room door to prevent the suspect(s) from entering.
• Do not evacuate rooms or the building until instructed to do so by a Safety and Security officer, the Building Monitor, or an Chabot College employee with proper identification or a Hayward Police Officer or unless it is absolutely clear that it is safe to do so.
• Special precautions must be taken to ensure that persons who have impaired hearing are notified and persons with disabilities are assisted as appropriate.
• Call 911 from any phone. Do not hang up on the dispatcher until instructed to do so. The following information should be provided:
  1. Indicate that there has been a shooting or that someone has been shot
  2. The exact location of the suspect(s) including the building number (if applicable), floor number (if applicable), room number (if applicable), nearest landmarks (bookstore, cafeteria, etc.)
  3. Whether you actually heard or saw any shots fired, if the suspect(s) is/are still shooting, what type of weapon(s) does the suspect(s) have? Handgun, Rifle, Shotgun or Explosive Device(s)?
  4. Description of suspect(s): race, clothing, direction of travel, vehicle(s)
  5. Condition and number of hostage(s) and victim(s) injured or killed
  6. Any information or demands supplied or made by suspect(s)?

IV.    Shooting Incident/Situation: Evacuate Only When Safe and Appropriate

• Active Shooter:
  • Evacuation is Not Recommended as the suspect(s) is/are mobile and fluid and often seeks targets of opportunity
  • It is generally safer to seek cover if near the suspect(s) and then move away quickly and stealthily keeping cover between you and the suspect(s) in the opposite direction
• Sniper/Barricaded Suspect(s)
  • Remain in place of shelter or safety until instructed to evacuate or leave
  • Follow instructions of police officer or building monitor
  • If shooting is in progress, keep a low profile and silhouette, always maintain cover, be silent, follow instructions
