If you are already sure ISLS is for you, and want to register electronically please continue with the additional information requested about your prior classes at Chabot College, and include a short writing sample. You may also emai that samplel separately to one of the participating faculty tutors - use the navigation bar to the left to find one of us.

Additional Application Information we need!

Please note that you will STILL have to enroll in the ISLS class block and pay the required fees separately at the Chabot College Registration Office. The application form below lets us know you are sincerely interested in attending and participating in the program, but it does not guarantee you a seat in the course, nor officially enroll you in the course.

  1. Do you have a job or plan to have one while in ISLS?

    I do not have a job and do not plan on obtaining one.

    I'll have a job. hours.

    Note: A work schedule of more than 20 hours may endanger your ability to study and remain in the program. ISLS is a full-time, 12-unit course with 13-14 hours of work a week in class, and requiring approximately 35 hours a week of reading, writing, and study outside of class.
     

  2. Academic Eligibility:

    To enroll in ISLS 1A, you should be eligible for English 1A.  Bring to your interview or provide to one of the tutors verification of :

    o        Results of Chabot College English Placement Test:

    o        Proof of completion or current enrollment in English 101 B or English 102

    o        Advanced Placement Test for English in High School

    o        Transcripts from another college or university with equivalent course work
     

    -          To enroll in  ISLS 1B, you must be eligible for English 1A.  Bring to your interview or provide to one of the tutors transcripts showing successful completion of English 101 B, English 102, or its equivalent.
     

    -    To enroll in ISLS 1C, you must have successfully completed English 1A.  Bring to your interview or provide to one of the tutors transcripts showing completion of 1A or its equivalent.

  4. Have you taken the recommended Chabot College Math Placement Test?



     

  5. Note: You'll need to ensure that there is no conflict between these foreign language classes and ISLS large-group and small-group morning lectures and discussions.
     

  6. The ISLS Schedule: Our on-campus class schedule for 2005 – 2006: Monday – Thursday from 9:00  – 10:15 AM in large group lecture and 10:30 –11:45 AM in small group discussion, and Tuesdays from 1:00 – 2:50 PM in colloquium.  (Colloquia typically run for 60 –90 minutes; for credit you must attend at least one half of those offered.)     

    Are you fully available at these times? 


    Note: The colloquium is an integral part of ISLS, providing opportunities for you to extend your learning. Distinguished lecturers and speakers will discuss current events as well as share insights about some of the authors and topics we will be reading about in our class.
     

  7. To receive laboratory science credit in ISLS, you must attend one lab section offered once per week for 3 hours in either Autumn 2005 or Spring 2006.  For this program, labs will be offered in Anthropology (afternoons) and Astronomy (evenings).  If you already have completed a science class with a lab, you are not required to attend an ISLS lab section, but you will be welcome.

    Will you need the one-unit science lab credit?



     

  8. In past cycles, the ISLS Program has offered students a chance to spend 4-8 weeks studying abroad, traditionally in London, during the summer after the program has completed.  Students can receive 6+ college units for this term.  Costs for the trip must be paid by the student.



     

  9. Either below, or in a separate email message (where you can attach a formatted document),  please write a short essay describing a book you have recently read that has impressed you in some way.  Identify and explain reasons why it impressed you, and if possible, give specific examples from the book to back up your points. You should aim to write one page, double-spaced.

     If you prefer to include the essay below, write it first in a word processor, spell-check it, and then select, cut and paste your work into the window below. Note that the window below will expand to encompass your work; there is no line or size limitation.

Please indicate your understanding and acceptance of the policy statements below. This will submit the form for review:

I understand that by enrolling in ISLS, I will be expected to attend and participate in both large-group lecture and small-group discussion Monday – Thursday, and in the ISLS Colloquium. I understand that the program requires 12-units of reading, writing, and study, and that additional courses may be required for graduation and transfer.

Having carefully read the ISLS brochure, I understand that my success in the program, including my grade, depends upon my self-motivation.
