Getting Help When You Need It
There Are
Many Ways to Find Help
It's important to be assertive in an online class--to seek
out and ask for help when you need it.
If you are having problems with Blackboard, a good place to find a solution is
at the
Online Learning Student Support website.
You'll find answers to many common questions there, and also be able to Submit
a Student Help Request
if you can't find your answer.
If you need some help with the content of your course, there are many ways to
get that assistance:
- Ask your instructor. Most instructors are very available by email, and
some may have "virtual office hours" in Blackboard in addition to regular
office hours on campus. Your instructor wants you to be successful, and
can't tell if you need help by the expression on your face, so just ask for
help.
- Visit your textbook website. Many textbooks have wonderful websites
that provide supplemental information and other great learning tools. You
may find flashcards, or PowerPoint presentations, or self-scoring quizzes.
Check it out.
- Find a "study buddy" in the class. You may already know some of your
classmates. If not, read through the discussion board and identify some
classmates that you'd like to team up for a study group, or just to exchange
questions and ideas. You can do that via email, phone, or perhaps even
within Blackboard.
- If your class has a "questions" discussion forum, post your questions
there. It's likely that any question you have is shared by several of your
classmates, so you'll actually be doing everyone a favor by asking.
Typically, you'll find that your classmates are very eager to help and may
actually reply before your instructor has a chance to even see the question!
- If you can come to the Chabot campus, you'll find learning resources in
many subjects. The
PATH
Center (Peer Academic Tutoring Center) has
tutors in many subjects. The WRAC
Center (Writing
and Reading Across the Curriculum) is a great resource for your significant
writing assignments.
Your instructor can provide more information about particular resources for
your class--just ask!
