Staying Motivated in Your Online Class

Defining and Achieving Your Goals

Just as with traditional classes, you need to be self-motivated to succeed in your online class. Maintaining your motivation in an online class requires that you first define your goals. Your goals might include:

  • completing a GE requirement that gets you closer to your ultimate goal of completing your degree

  • learning something that you know will be important in your career
  • learning something that you've always wanted to learn
  • proving to yourself that you have the determination to succeed in an online course
  • Define those goals at the beginning of the class. Write them down, and keep them with your syllabus and assignments calendar. This will help you stay focused on your class.

    Other Suggestions for Staying Motivated

You might also consider creating an assignments checklist for the entire course, listing all the due dates. As you complete each assignment, check it off. With each checkmark, you'll know you're closer to achieving your goals.

You can also check your grades in Blackboard at any time. Some students determine how many total points they need to achieve their goal in the class, and then track their progress at least weekly.

If you've found a "study buddy" in the class, try emailing each other at least once a week to remind each other what's due, and to talk about how you're doing in the class. These continual reminders will help you stay focused on your goal.

Finally, keep in touch with your instructor. Ask how you're doing. Ask for suggestions if you're struggling with the course or just with your motivation.  Your instructor wants you to succeed and may be able to provide the needed encouragement to help you achieve your goals.

Establish your goals, write them down, track your progress, and communicate regularly. You can do it!
