Blackboard Messages

If your class is using the Messages feature, you can send and receive course-specific messages to/from other users (and the instructor) from within Blackboard. Messages remain within Blackboard (not related to the Send Email tool, which sends email communication to an external email account).

How to use the Messages tool in Blackboard

 Creating/ Sending a Message:

 

  • Click Communication (in the Course Menu)
  • Click Messages
  • To create a message, click the New Message button
  • Under Recipients, you can add or modify recipients by clicking on the “To” button
  • This will open the Select Recipients window, which will allow you to select who you would like to receive your message.
  • After selecting each recipient, click the > arrow to add the recipient. Repeat this for each user you want to add).
  • Once you’ve selected all of your recipients, click the Submit button, which will bring you back to the message box.
  • This will allow you to type your message in the provided Body box (remember to include a subject). Optional: You can also add a file as an attachment to your message.
  • To send your message, click Submit.

Reading a Message:

 

  • Click Communication (in the Course Menu)
  • Click Messages
  • Click Inbox
  • Click on the Subject name to read the message.
  • Optional: You can also reply to a message by clicking the Reply button. You can then select the recipients, enter your response, and click Submit.
  • Click OK when you are done reading the message.
