ANAT 1 - General Human Anatomy

Course Description

Structure and function of the human body with emphasis on microscopic and gross anatomy.  Microscopic examination of normal and pathological tissues, and dissection, supplemented by use of charts, models, and computer assisted instruction.

This class begins August 17th and ends December 19th

On-Campus Meetings

Students will meet on campus on the following Wednesdays from 6:00 - 9:20p.m., Room 2110:  8/26, 9/9, 9/23, 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, 11/4, 11/18, 12/2, 12/9 and 12/16
 (mandatory in-class attendance times).    The Anatomy Lab (Room 2110) will be open on MW from 4:15-5:45 p.m. and Friday TBA for study sessions.  These sessions are not required, but are to give students an opportunity to complete lab exercises and to obtain assistance from an instructor.

Optional On-Campus Orientations

You can attend an OPTIONAL, on-campus Orientation to Online Learning that provides Blackboard log in instructions and help, an overview of the Blackboard course management system, and tips on netiquette, time management, and study skills for the online student.  Attend any one of these sessions:

How This Class Operates

Welcome to online anatomy!

This is not a self-paced class; there are due dates throughout the semester that you are expected to meet, just like in a traditional, face-to-face class.

All of the lectures for this course and 7 of 34 labs will be conducted online. Seven labs as well as the three exams (lecture exams and laboratory practicals) will be conducted on campus in room 2110.

On-campus meeting dates for Fall '09 are:
8/26, 9/9, 9/23, 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, 11/4, 11/18, 12/2, 12/0 and 12/16.

This course will move at the same pace as the on campus classes, typically covering two chapters a week.  Each chapter will be broken down into narrated lecture sections with progress quizzes and each will have a chapter review that will be submitted online for a grade by specified dates.  For each chapter, there will be a corresponding lab that will be completed at home using your text, the accompanying CD-rom, and several websites.  I will collect 10 of these "at-home" labs for grading as the semester progresses.

Our first on campus meeting is August 26 @ 6:00 in 2110. During this class we will complete lab #2 - so you need to bring your lab manual and textbook to class.  Prior to attending the first on-campus meeting, each student should have logged into Blackboard and completed the first two lectures/reviews (Chapter 1 & Chapter 4 - epithelial tissues).

Technology

The CD-ROM will run on both a Mac and a PC, and you will need Java version 1.4.2 or higher (which is a free download).

You will need a connection to the internet to view all of the course materials on Blackboard, as well as to access some videos during lecture and laboratory materials at outside websites.

The lectures are all in PowerPoint format and also have a mp3 file in which I am talking about the accompanying slides.

Additionally, a few handouts for specific lecture topics are posted as Word docs.

How Students are Graded

Chapter reviews - 5 points each (x28)
At home labs - 10 points each (x10)
Lecture exams - 100 points each (x2)
Practical exams - 140 points each (x3)
Final lecture exam - 200 points

Succeeding in an Online Course

Students who succeed in online courses tend to be independent, self-motivated learners with good computer skills. If you are a procrastinator who relies heavily on the instructor for motivation, or can't use a computer too well, you should probably consider enrolling in a face-to-face course instead.   Or, you might consider enrolling in our Introduction to Online Learning course (GNST-4910), which provides an overview of online learning and equips you to succeed in your first online class.

Don't enroll in this class if you believe the myth that learning online requires less effort than learning face-to-face. This course covers the same content and has similar activities as the face-to-face version of the course; only the method of delivery changes.

Blackboard

This course will use the Blackboard course management system as its virtual classroom. To learn how to log in to Blackboard, go to the How to Begin an Online Course page. Once you enroll, you will not be able to log in until the first day of class.  Students are expected to become familiar with the use and operation of Blackboard functions and are encouraged to attend an orientation session provided by the Distance Education program at Chabot College. In addition, the professor provides a general unit on "How to Navigate in Blackboard" for students to understand how to use the major features the professor employs.
