WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

Chabot Basketball Roundup (Jan. 2 Edition)

WOMEN’S

There’s nothing quite like a date with City College of San Francisco to help a team settle into a conference season.
But the surging Chabot women’s basketball team appears ready for the challenge. The Gladiators (12-5) will travel to the defending Coast-North Conference champion Rams (13-3) Wednesday to begin the conference season, in an attractive matchup between Coast-North’s two power brokers.
Chabot is fresh off winning the championship of the De Anza tourney.
The Gladiators have won 10 of 11 after a 2-4 start. Indeed it's been a December to remember.
De’Zire Hall (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Tylore Bell (16 points, 10 assists) had double-doubles in the Gladiators’ 65-50 win over Sacramento City (7-7) on Dec. 30 in the De Anza tourney final. Chabot also beat host De Anza 69-53 and Cosumnes River 75-42 in the event.
Hall amassed 30 points and 14 boards against De Anza. Against Cosumnes River, Hall had 16 points, Ariana Vargas had 15, and Aiyanna Gallegos added 13. Ugo Obiama had 10 rebounds and Bell had 11 boards.
Chabot will host San Jose (7-8) on Friday

MEN’S
The young Gladiators (3-11), paced by state individual scoring leader DeMarre Walker, averaging 25.4 points per game, will have a daunting challenge as they open Coast-North play Wednesday at defending state champion CCSF (15-1).
In the Gladiators’ 88-86 win over Bethesda JV Dec. 28 in their opener of the Chabot Classic, Walker amassed 35 points on 14 for 32 shooting from the floor and 5 for 10 from 3-point range. Walker had 30 points in an 80-68 loss to Wayne County in the semifinals, and then Chabot fell to Antelope Valley 100-66 in the third-place game.
Chabot will play Foothill (10-5) in the Gladiators' conference home opener at 7 p.m. Friday.
Overall, it will be tough sledding in the powerful Coast-North; six of the seven teams have at least victories and four have at least 12 wins.
