FOOTBALL

Chabot got off to a strong start in searching for its first National-Valley Conference win of the season.

The Gladiators jumped out to an early 9-7 lead over defending conference champion Modesto.

But Chabot was unable to keep up the momentum as the Pirates scores the last 34 points of the game for a 41-9 victory at Gladiator Stadium.

Coming into the game the Gladiators (1-7, 0-3 National-Valley) averaged just 68 rushing yards a game, but this time they exploded for 71 in the first quarter alone.

Running back DeAngelo Stubbs had a 36-yard blast in the opening quarter as Chabot reached the Pirates 3 before settling for a 20-yard field goal by Jason Castro.

Modesto (4-4, 2-1) responded with a 1-yard touchdown by Noah Preuss for a 7-3 Pirates lead.

The Gladiators went 78 yards in six plays on their next possession. Quarterback Vondell Pilcher hit Ryan Silvas for completions of 38 and seven yards to the Modesto 10 where

"We got off to a fast start with our offense," Stubbs said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't keep the momentum up."

Pilcher found a wide-open Samuel Adams for a 19-yard scoring play to give Chabot a 9-7 lead after the point-after was blocked.

From there the Pirates took over, scoring touchdowns in two straight drives in the second for a 20-9 lead heading into halftime.

Pilcher was 10 for 22 for 108 yards and a touchdown. Malik Henderson led Chabot with three catches for 31 yards. Stubbs rushed for 56 of his team-high 60 yards in the opening quarter.

Ozbourne Seuteni had 1 ½ sacks and Devon Vaenuku had a fourth-quarter interception for the Gladiators.

Chabot is back in action Saturday at College of Sequoias.
