WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

Chabot weekly sports roundup, Feb 21

WOMEN'S TENNIS LOOKING SHARP
The early returns are looking good for the Chabot women’s tennis team, which has been dodging raindrops and trying to get a few matches in the books.
How wet has it been?
Well, the Gladiators were only able to get in two of their first nine scheduled matches. But the good news is Chabot’s women are 2-0!
The Gladiators own victories over Solano 6-3 and CCSF 8-1. No. 1 singles player Diana Rodriguez, a San Leandro High graduate, is 2-0 as an individual with wins over Camille Contawe of Solano 6-0, 7-5 and Amy Forwand of CCSF 7-6, 6-4.
Chabot’s men’s team (0-2) has fallen to Solano 8-1 and Modesto 5-4. Against Modesto, Chabot’s winners were Tennyson High graduate Dennis Cheung, Eli Gonzalez (Kennedy-Fremont), the doubles team of Jesse Pawid and Gonzalez, and the doubles team of Dan Le (American) and Donald Saik of Malaysia. Cheung was the lone winner against Solano.
Other Chabot women’s winners against Solano were Sharon Cahill of Illinois, Eva Vu (Tennyson), both in singles, and the doubles teams of Monique Tran (James Logan) and Cahill, Rodriguez and Lora Oco (James Logan) and Vu and Gina Savnik (Moreau). Brianna Wong (Castro Valley) won a thriller against CCSF 6-1, 3-6, (13-11).

SOFTBALL
Chabot (3-4) found its mojo with a doubleheader sweep of West Hills 5-0 and 8-0 on Feb. 14.

Third baseman Chelsea Sligh had two doubles among her three hits, and right fielder Melissa Jauregui also had three hits. Brieanna Lewis had a triple, and Desiree Gonzalez had a double.
In the 8-0 win over six innings, Alina Garcia fired a four-hitter. Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Sligh was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Leadoff Amanda Coley was 2 for 4 with a run. The Gladiators rapped out 14 hits, getting production up and down the batting order.
Weather permitting, Chabot will open conference play on Tuesday at De Anza, before hosting rival Ohlone on Thursday. They will host Siskiyous in a rescheduled game on Friday.

BASEBALL
Fresh off back-to-back wins, Chabot (4-5) is scheduled to travel to Cosumnes River on Tuesday and Diablo Valley on Friday.
In a 6-0 win over Cosumnes River on Feb. 14, shortstop Vincent Volpatti and DH Mathew Barraza both had three hits, and second baseman Jalen Bustos had a monster game with a double and home run. Like Bustos, left fielder Nathan Wright had two hits and two runs scored.
