WEEKLY ATHLETICS RECAP

Chabot sports roundup, Sept 18

CHABOT SPORTS ROUNDUP
FOOTBALL DROPS ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER
One of these days the ball is going to bounce the Gladiators way.
The Chabot football team absorbed its third consecutive close defeat last week, falling 31-21 to unbeaten Butte in Shasta, after showing great determination in rallying from an early 14-0 deficit to tie the game, 21-21.
Resilient Chabot quarterback Johnny O’Brien continued his stellar start of the season. He is ranked fourth in the state, averaging 272.7 yards a game and is No. 1 in completion percentage at 71.3 percent (77 of 108).

The Gladiators have lost three times by an average of five points.
A Shasta flea flicker on the first play of the game and a touchdown off a fluke turnover put the hosts in control in the first quarter, but Chabot cut the deficit to 14-13 on back-to-back touchdowns by Julo Tagalu, on a 3-yard run, and Deangelo Stubbs, on a 16-yard pass from O’Brien.
Stubbs also scored on a 2-yard completion from O’Brien with 4:47 left in the third quarter to tie the game 21-21, along with Malik Henderson’s two-point reception. But Butte scored the final 10 points to prevail.
O’Brien was relieved by Vondell Pilcher late in the game after absorbing a knock, but Chabot coach Eric Fanene expects his standout signal-caller will be fine.
“He’s resilient,’ Fanene said of O’Brien, who passed for 240 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Stubbs and Henderson both had seven receptions. Tagalu averaged 41.5 yards over four punts.
Chabot will host CCSF (1-2), which is coming off its first win 40-26 over American River (2-1), at 6 p.m. Saturday at Gladiator Stadium.

MEN’S SOCCER
Chabot (1-5) dropped its fourth straight decision, 2-0 against host Siskiyous on Friday. Chabot will complete nonconference play this week with two home games against Lake Tahoe on Tuesday and Allan Hancock on Friday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Gladiators (1-3-1) split games last week, falling to Modesto 4-0 and beating West Hills-Lemoore 4-1.
Sydney Hollingsworth continued her sharp play with a hat trick and an assist against West Hills. Marisol Martinez had the other Chabot goal. The Gladiators open conference play at Evergreen Valley on Sept. 26.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Gladiators (1-3) dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision against Contra Costa on Sept. 13 (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 26-24). Chabot opens conference play on Friday at San Jose.
