PUENTE PROJECT AGREEMENT AND COMMITMENT AS A PUENTE STUDENT

The Puente Project is for students whose goal is to transfer and therefore, want a transfer program that will help them complete their transfer requirements to a 4-year college or university.

The mission of the Puente Project is not only to increase the number of educationally underserved and under-represented students who enroll and earn degrees in four-year colleges and universities, but to also increase the number of those who return to the community as leaders and mentors in service of succeeding generations. Puente is open to ALL interested students.

In order to support Puente students in reaching their goal the program provides and requires students to participate in:

1.        The Puente English Courses each semester to develop critical reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in a college or university,

2.       The Puente Counseling and Counseling-Psychology Courses each semester to develop self-confidence, self-understanding; a knowledge of requirements; and an Educational Plan necessary for transfer,

3.       Puente Mentoring each semester by professional, volunteer mentors to develop an understanding for the professional work world,

4.       Puente Educational, Career, & Cultural Activities each semester that further support students in synthesizing career and life goals.

As part of being a Puente student you take on the responsibility to participate in a Learning Community and to participate in Service Learning activities that develop:

Ø       leadership skills,

Ø       public speaking skills,

Ø       community-building skills, and

Ø       participatory decision-making skills.

As a Puente student you begin the process of preparation to undertake all of the above with your instructors/counselors, mentors and fellow Puente students.  Out of respect for students not admitted, your instructors, peers and yourself, you must be able to participate and commit to all of the above.   Please be mindful that opportunities abound for any Puente student when accepting your admission into the program.  From previous experience we know that some students feel that Puente can help them over-come a lack of student success skills but this cannot occur unless you, the student, make a commitment to develop new habits, especially those which are taught in Puente Psychology-Counseling courses.  Therefore, Puente is not the answer for you if you are a student that is not committed to your own change and are not willing to participate in all the activities that Puente offers.  TURN-IN YOUR FORM BUT PLEASE KEEP THIS PORTION AS REFERENCE ABOUT YOUR COMMITMENT.
