About Us
The Chabot College Department of Campus Safety and Security is comprised of
a unique partnership between Chabot College and the Hayward
Police Department.
The director is a sworn Hayward police sergeant who is augmented by a staff
consisting of a Hayward police officer, civilian campus safety officers, dispatchers,
on-call campus safety officers, and student cadets. The Chabot-Las Positas
Community College District and the Hayward Police Department have a written
contract to identify the scope of services provided by each entity to serve
the campus community (E.C. 67381). This blend of police and civilian staff
affords a greater range of efficient services to our campus community. Officers
are on duty at all times when classes are in session, and on weekends and holidays
to patrol the campus. Officers enforce the laws of the United States, State
of California and regulations adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Chabot-Las
Positas Community College District.
Our Peace and Campus Safety Officers
The Hayward Police Sergeant as well as the Hayward Police Officer assigned
to the campus are peace officers as defined in California Penal Code section
830.1(a). These peace officers exercise all authority granted them by statute
including the powers of arrest as defined in California Penal Code section
836, California Vehicle Code section 40302 and 40303, and California Welfare
and Institutions Code sections 300, 601, 602 and 5150. Campus Safety Officers
are appointed pursuant to section 70902 of the California Education Code. Campus
Safety Officers are not peace officers, but as school security officers are
provided special authority by the California Penal Code, Vehicle Code, and
Education Code to enforce campus rules and regulations. Authority for arrests
by Campus Safety Officers are authorized pursuant to California Penal Code
section 837. All of our staff receive continuing professional training in first
aid, CPR, emergency response, disaster preparedness, safety, and security each
year.
Chabot College is concerned about the safety and welfare of all members of
the college community and is committed to providing a safe and secure environment.
Although the college has been fortunate in not having experienced a significant
number of criminal incidents, it would not be honest to assume such incidents
could not take place. Therefore, we have developed policies and procedures
designed to prevent or minimize the potential for criminal events before they
occur. Please take the time to read the sections on crime
prevention, safety
programs, and crime statistics or contact us for
more details.
