National Youth Sports Program (NYSP)

About NYSP

UPDATE:  The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) Grant was not federally funded for 2006. Therefore, NYSP will not be offered at Chabot College. However, we are working on the development of a summer youth program that will be offered in June/July 2006.   Please call 510-723-6917 for additional information.

The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) at Chabot College is a free 6-week sports and education program for youth ages 10-16 years old. In 1968, representatives of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports piloted the NYSP concept during the summer at two university athletics facilities. On March 17, 1969, the White House announced that the federal government would commit $3 million to establish a sports program for economically disadvantaged youth, to be called the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). The federal grant has significantly increased since then, and strong congressional support persists for NYSP program objectives. Funding appropriations are renewed on an annual basis. NYSP has spent the last 35 years providing youth from low-income communities the opportunity to receive benefits from structured sports and education programs. Boys and girls, ages 10 through 16, are eligible to participate at no cost.

The Chabot College NYSP program was instituted in 2001 and since, has been serving the community annually and working with sponsors to improve the program.

All Participants are required to complete the NYSP application and get a physical exam with the NYSP medical form. Each year, free medical exams are offered to applicants by Chabot College. The program for 2005 ran from June 20th - July 28th, 8:00 am - 1:45 PM, Monday-Thursday (Exception: Camp was in session on Friday June 24 and July 8). Breakfast and lunch were served to participants daily. We offer Sports instruction in swimming, tennis, basketball, soccer, and other sports, health and nutrition instruction, drug & alcohol awareness instruction, free Medical Exams for applicants and Perfect Attendance and Outstanding Camper Awards. Enrollment in NYSP is limited to 230 participants from the Chabot College Service area: Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and Union City. All applicants are considered on a first come, first served. Applications subject to eligibility verification - 90% of NYSP applicants must meet income guidelines. Look for 2006 Applications in April of 2006.
