2020 Presidential Primary Election in California

The Primary Election helps determine which Democratic and Republican candidates will square off against each other in the November 2020 Election.

Dates & Deadlines

  • February 3, 2020 : First day of mailing Vote By Mail Ballots and Early Voting.
    The date, times, and locations for early voting and conditional voter registration may be confirmed on the Secretary of State website or at the Alameda County elections office.
  • February 18, 2020 : Deadline to Register to Vote
  • March 3, 2020 : Election Day

How to Register to Vote

  • If you want to vote in the Democratic Presidential Primary it is recommended that you choose Democratic party preference when you register
  • If you want to vote in the Republican Presidential Primary you must choose Republican party preference when you register
  • If you wish to receive a mail-in ballot please select that option when you register.

Requirements to Vote

To vote you must:

  • be a United States citizen
  • be 18 years of age on or before the day of the election (you can pre-register at 16)
  • be a resident of the State of California
  • not be in prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony (you may begin to vote again once you are on probation or anytime after you are off of probation, even if you have a felony conviction on your record)
