Chabot weekly sports recap - 10/16/17



Chabot continued its solid season with a third-place finish in the Northern California Dual Championships this past week.

Next, the Gladiators will host State No. 1 Fresno City on Tuesday in the Main Gym, beginning at 7 p.m.

In the NorCal Dual Championships, the Gladiators took first in their pool with wins over Lassen 29-12 and Skyline 39-18.

In the Championship pool, Chabot fell to Fresno City 54-0 and Sacramento City 49-6.


The Gladiators dropped their conference opener 42-14 at Fresno City on Saturday. Chabot sophomore Johnny O’Brien, who is ranked 12th in the state in yards passing per game at 226.8, completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Adams in the first quarter to tie the game 7-7.

Chabot’s Vondell Pitcher also completed a 14-yard TD pass to DaJuan Johnson in the fourth quarter. Deangelo Stubbs led Chabot runners with 45 yards on 10 carries.

O’Brien completed 21-of-36 passes for 194 yards, finding nine different receivers. Malik Henderson, Malik Langham and Stubbs led the way with four receptions apiece. Shanai Leon had three grabs for 38 yards.

Chabot (1-5, 0-1 National-Valley) will continue conference play at home against San Joaquin Delta (2-4, 0-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Delta suffered its third straight loss last week, falling 40-7 to Laney in its conference opener.


The Gladiators men’s team (0-4-1, 1-12-1) will host De Anza at 3 p.m. on Friday in conference play. In a 2-1 defeat to Skyline on Oct. 10, Brandon Sosa scored Chabot’s goal off a Cristian Guzman assist.

In women’s action, Chabot (1-6-3, 0-2-1) gave a strong effort in a 2-2 draw with powerful Foothill (6-2-2, 2-0-1). Kassie Barillas and Sydney Hollingsworth scored for Chabot and Breanna Aranda had two assists. Hollingsworth leads the team with seven goals.


The Gladiators will host College of San Mateo at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
