Chabot sports roundup, Nov 6th edition

Sophomore quarterback Johnny O’Brien returned from an injury with spectacular results, throwing six touchdowns passes in a 45-37 triumph over Sequoias Saturday night in Visalia.

O’Brien was typically efficient, completing 26 of 37 attempts for 382 yards with five touchdown throws of at least 20 yards. He is ranked sixth in the state in average yards passing with 249.0 per game and is tied for sixth in completion percentage at 65.7.

Now the Gladiators (2-7, 1-3 National Valley) hope to close the season with a walk-off win against arch-rival Laney (8-1, 4-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Gladiator Stadium. Laney clinched at least a share of the conference title with a 40-33 win over Modesto last week.

In the second quarter on Saturday, O’Brien had blockbuster touchdown completions of 76 yards to Dajuan Johnson and 73 yards to Austin Camel.

In the second half, O’Brien’s 20-yard TD passes to Ryan Silvas and Samuel Adams, each followed by Jason Castro extra points, upped Chabot’s lead to 38-23 in the entertaining game. Adams also had a 15-yard TD catch in the first quarter to give Chabot its first lead, 7-6.

During a wild fourth quarter, Sequoias trimmed the deficit to 38-30 on a 76-yard TD reception by Phillip Adams, but Chabot’s Malik Langham effectively put it out of reach on a 23-yard TD catch from O’Brien with 5:07 left in the game.

Chabot (0-2) opened the season with back-to-back losses in the Sierra Tip-Off, falling 74-69 against Solano and 89-61 against Sierra.

In the Solano defeat, Chabot led by 14 at one point and by seven at halftime. Chabot also fared well in the first half against Sierra; the game was tied at 32 at the intermission before Sierra went on a 57-29 run to the final buzzer.

Chabot will host the Chabot Classic Nov. 17-19. The Gladiators will open against West Valley at 6 p.m. Nov. 17.

The always competitive Gladiators, guided by head coach Mark Anger, will open the season at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday against De Anza, and then will host Mission on Friday.

Chabot finished 22-8 in 2016-17, falling to Foothill in Round 2 of the Northern California Regionals as the ninth seed. Chabot, led last season by sophomore guard Tylore Bell, a second-team NorCal All-State pick, finished second behind CCSF in the Coast-North.

The Gladiators continued to excel with a 42-13 triumph over host Modesto Junior College, benefiting from four individual forfeit wins.

Chabot's Pakon Saksrithai won by fall at 125 pounds, in 1:30 over Kevin Casillas. Logan Atchinson (184) and Lazaro Carrasco (197) also won by fall.

Chumkaur Dhaliwal (285) dropped a 7-2 decision to Jesse Flores. Rafael Vegas (165) lost a major decision against William Schwertscharf, 12-1.

Next, the Gladiators, guided by head coach Steve Siroy, will travel to Skyline in San Bruno on Wednesday.

After earning a coveted 4-2 win over Monterey Peninsula on Oct. 27, the Gladiators (2-16-1, 0-8-1) endured back-to-back shutout defeats against Canada (1-0) and Cabrillo (6-0).

The Gladiators (2-11-3. 1-7-1) earned a feel-good 3-0 win over De Anza on Oct. 3 as Sydney Hollingsworth had a goal and an assist. Sara Tanco had two assists and Tyna Moore and Erica Alarcon also scored. Goalkeeper Sandra Martinez worked a clean sheet with five saves.

Chabot fell to Cabrillo 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-5) to remain winless on the season.
