Transfer Rates and Numbers
Transfer rates and transfer numbers should measure the number of community college students who transfer to four-year colleges. However, while our students transfer to many public and private 4-year colleges, until recently we have only had access to our transfers to CSU and UC. Therefore, our historical transfer rates include only our students who have transferred to CSU and UC, while the most recent rate includes transfers to other colleges. Below are these transfer rates for Chabot College and for all California Community Colleges. Following are the numbers of transfers to CSU and UC. |
Transfer Rates to CSU/UC: 1990-95; to CSU/UC and others: 1997 |
Transfer rates express the percentage of community college students who transfer to four-year colleges. The transfer rate depends upon how the group of potential transfer students is defined - should all students at the community college be considered potential transfer students, even if they do not intend to transfer, or should we consider only those who declare or act like they intend to transfer, such as those who take more than one course? In their transfer rate study the Transfer Assembly, the Center for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) used the following definition of potential transfer students - first-time students who entered in a particular Fall term and earned 12 or more credits within four years. The transfer rate is definied as the percentage of this group who transferred to UC or CSU within four years. For five years, Chabot College was among 73 California Community Colleges who were part of this Transfer Assembly. Recently, the state Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) was able to calculate this rate for transfers to UC, CSU, and to all other U.S. colleges. For Fall 1986 to 1991 furst-time students, Chabot's transfer rate to UC and CSU only was at or above the state average; for the Fall 1993 cohort, the transfer rate to UC, CSU plus all other colleges was much higher for Chabot - 38 percent compared to an average of about 29 percent for the other California community colleges in this study. |
