Click here to watch a full recording of the show!

In this 2012 Pulitzer Prize winning drama,  Quiara Alegrîa Hudes, writer of the book for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, introduces us to Elliot, a veteran of the Iraq war. As he struggles to find his place in the world, we are also introduced to the members of an addiction chat room trying to get through their day. When Elliot’s mother dies, cyber meets reality, anger gives way to understanding, and the resistance to their pasts and each other becomes a chance at forgiveness. In this heartfelt meditation on lives on the brink of redemption, the boundaries of family and community are stretched across continents and cyberspace, as birth families splinter, and online families collide.

Water by the Spoonful opened at Stage One on October 31, 2019 and closed to a standing ovation matinee November 10th, 2019.

Fall 2018 - ¡CHEER!
Click here to watch a full recording of the show!

During Fall 2018 in Stage One we presented a new play written by Theater Arts faculty Linda Amayo-Hassan titled ¡CHEER! Story of a Dreamer.

¡CHEER! Humanizes the experience of being undocumented in our country in these current times. The story centers on Erica, a Latina high school senior living in Hayward, who discovers she is undocumented while applying for college. Beginning in the Obama years, then continuing to today, our current political/social struggle around immigration issues are the center of the play. Starting on a light note, capturing the fun and ease of being a popular kid in school, with a boisterous group of cheerleaders serving as a kind of Greek chorus, the story quickly gets more serious as Erica discover the truth about her and her family’s status.
