Chabot basketball preview, Jan 17


The young Chabot men’s and women’s basketball teams return to action tonight with a home doubleheader against East Bay-rival Ohlone in the Coast Conference-North Division.
The Gladiators women (14-4, 2-1 Coast-North), ranked 14th in the CCCWBCA State Poll and seventh in the North Region, will face the Renegades (0-15, 0-4) at 5 p.m. The Chabot men will meet Ohlone at 7 p.m.
The Chabot men are led by the freshman duo of Jorden Gilmete (12.2 ppg) and Stephen Northington (12.0 ppg). Chabot’s Isaiah Ali came off the bench to score 15 points in a loss to Skyline on Friday. Northington added 13 points and five boards.
The Chabot women rebounded from a hard-fought defeat to Coast-North leader CCSF with an impressive 80-66 road triumph over Skyline on Jan. 12, in which the Gladiators showed excellent balance, led by Kim Masulit (18 points), Olivia Vezaldenos (16), Ferrynn Steen (14), and Mia Finney (12). Alyssa Pluth had 10 assists and five rebounds.
A spark from the bench, Steen also had a team-high nine boards, Finnie had eight rebounds,and Jessika Davis was a force on defense with five of her seven rebounds on the defensive end.
