Types of Databases

The two types of databases that you will be using are: library catalog and library subscription periodical databases.

Library catalogs

organize all of the materials a library purchases. These include records for books, magazines, journals, newspapers, videos, sound recordings, images, etc.  Recrods for eBooks and some articles now appear (although hardly complete when it comes to articles, especially those in full text).

Periodical Databases are used to identify articles on a topic.

Some periodical databases such as EbscoHost academic search premier, the ProQuest Diversity databases, and Lexis-Nexis Academic are general or multidisciplinary.
Other periodical databases specialize in a particular subject area.  For example, CINAHL Plus Text focuses on the health disciplines and is especially targeted to students and professionals in Nursing and other Allied Health professions.
