CLEA | Chicano Latino Education Association 

A network of Latinx professionals, advocacy & professional development  

Founded in January 1987, CLEA advocates and supports opportunities for Chicano/Latino students, faculty, classified professional and administrator at Chabot Las Positas Community College District. The goals of CLEA include ensuring that the District: 
  • Increases access, retention and graduation rates of Chicano/ Latino students. 
  • Recruits, retains, promotes and tenures greater numbers of Chicano/Latino faculty and staff. 
  • Provides increased opportunities for Chicano/Latino faculty, classified professionals and administrators to advance to administrative and policy making positions. 
  • Reflects the Chicano/Latino experience throughout the curriculum. 
  • Improves its ties with and service to the Chicano/Latino community. 

Meetings

CLEA meets on the second Thursday of the month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Chabot College in Building 400, room 405. 

*All full and part-time staff from the Chabot Las Positas Community College District are invited to CLEA meetings. 

Latinx and CLEA-sponsored Events

La Bienvenida- (September)

Every fall semester, members of the Chicano Latino Education Association (CLEA) host La Bienvenida.
La Bienvenida 
serves as an opportunity to welcome new and continuing students to Chabot’s campus, as well as to celebrate and honor Hispanic Heritage Month.

Speakers Series- (Throughout academic year)

CLEA will invite prominent Latin@ leaders to campus as part of a Speakers Series to address their experiences and expertise. This will allow students the opportunity to identify with some of the challenges faced by presenters while achieving their personal goals. Such topics include; literature, the arts, politics and education.

El Dia De Los Muertos (November)

On November 2nd, this traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico, parts of Central America, and in the United States. Student will learn about this tradition that celebrates and honors ancestors and loved ones who have passed by connecting the living and the dead.

Raza College Day- (November 7)

Raza College Day is designed to support the mission of creating a college going culture in the Hayward and surrounding communities. Raza College Day will not only serve as an outreach opportunity to the community, but it also serves as an opportunity for current Chabot students to learn about and access Chabot resources that will assist them in reaching their academic goals.

Student participate in various workshops that will discuss topics such as: financial aid, scholarships, UC & CSU admission requirements, AB540 students and various other college topics.

Southern California Campus & History Tour – (March)

Southern California Campus & History Tour during spring break. This tour is open to students who will be transferring to a 4-year college. Students will have the opportunity to visit UC, CSU, Private campuses. There will also be a visit to the Cesar Chavez, National Monument in Keene, CA. Prior to the attending the tour students will have to attend two mandatory meetings, which will include a historical presentation on the work and life of Cesar Chavez, Human Rights Advocate.

Chican@/Latin@ Graduation Celebration (May)

Annually CLEA hosts the Chican@/Latin@ Graduation Celebration. This event is an opportunity for students and their families to celebrate their accomplishments earned here at Chabot College. Students who have earned a certificate, AA/AS degree and or transferring are invited to attend. Chican@/Latin@ Graduation Celebration provides a culturally empowering ceremony including speakers in English and Spanish and performances representing historical traditions from throughout the Americas.

Professional Development Opportunities for CLPCCD staff: 

  • Classified Professional Grant 
  • CLIP (Classified Leadership Institute for Professionals) 
  • COLEGAS (California Community Colleges Organización de Latinx Empowerment, Guidance, Advocacy for Success) 
  • Offers support for current Latinx employees, advocates to address issues that impact the Latinx community, and creates a platform to give voice to the experiences of Latinx professionals within the institution. 
  •  La Escalera Program, to support Latinx community college practitioners prepare for the job application and interview process
