Top 10 things to do this SUMMER

(from your friends on the  DE Committee)

Are you curious about online teaching?  Are you skeptical, but willing to explore?  Are you interested in the benefits that technology may bring to your on-campus courses?  Are you already teaching online, and looking to take your courses to the next level? If you have some spare time this summer, there are many opportunities to learn about online pedagogy, online and on-campus technologies, and to help shape online learning at Chabot.

10.  Attend the 2-day Online Teaching Conference at Ohlone College on June 11-12.  Information on the conference is available at http://www.cccone.org/07Conference.  If you can’t attend, many of the conference sessions are also available live over the Internet or as archived sessions.

9.  Explore some of the online teaching journals, which are (of course!) available online.  Some of the best are Innovate (http://www.innovateonline.info), JOLT—the Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (http://jolt.merlot.org), and OJDLA—Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration (http://www.westga.edu/~distance/ojdla).

8.  Review Chabot’s Online Course Proposal Form to see the important questions to consider when developing an online course at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DECSC/forms/2007proposalform.doc.  You can view all of the proposals submitted by your colleagues this past year at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DECSC/proposals/200607.  Just click on the underlined course number to open the proposal.

7.  Take an online course!  @One offers free online courses this summer.  Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning is offered July 9th to August 3rd.   Introduction to Online Teaching with Blackboard is offered July 16th to August 10th.  More information is available at http://www.cccone.org/de/07summer/courses.

6.  Read a book about online teaching.  There are 11 books about online teaching available at the Chabot Library.  Just ask for “Novak reserves” at the main desk.  You can view the list of available books at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DECSC/documentation/Online%20Teaching%20Book%20List.doc.

5.  Ask a challenging question.  The DE Committee wants to start a lively dialogue about online learning and online teaching.  We need to know what’s on your mind.  Send us your ideas, questions, concerns at jnovak@chabotcollege.edu.  Your questions will help shape our research, our workshops and training, and our efforts to ensure online student retention and success.

4.  Participate in an Innovate live webinar the week of June 5th.  These 1-hour online presentations/discussions explore many aspects of online learning, and are quite provocative.  You’ll need to register at http://www.uliveandlearn.com/PortalInnovate to explore seminar topics.

3.  Attend a 3-day workshop at Ohlone College on June 13-15.  Topics include Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning, Creating Audio for Your Course/Podcasting, and Flash Fundamentals.  More information is available at http://www.cccone.org/institutes/07summer.

2.  Participate in a free @One desktop seminar.  These seminars are one hour interactive seminars presented on the web and telephone.  The seminars cover a broad range of topics, from Office 2007 to PDFs to Powerpoint to Flash, but some focus specifically on online teaching.  More information is available at http://www.cccone.org/de/07summer/seminars.

1.  Rest and relax over the summer so you’re ready to participate in a Convocation workshop on online learning; to enroll in online classes we’re developing to build our skills to teach exceptional online courses; and to engage in a series of workshops on student perspectives about online learning, key issues in online learning (including academic integrity, retention, and accessibility), and the hybrid online (partially on-campus, partially online) course model that some researchers believe may be the optimal learning modality.  We’ll share much more information about all of this at Convocation.  We also welcome new members to our committee, which meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month during College Hour.

Have a great summer, and we’ll see you in August!
